Rolex Cellini - why or why not

I love my submariners and to be honest, i have never owned a real dressy watch.
Can someone please enlighten me on the Cellini, its history and why it is seen as second best to the rest of the rolex range.
Why isnt it a stand alone brand like Tudor? Its so different from the other Rolexes out there, I cannot work out what its place is.

You kind of answered your own question.

i cant quite wrap my head abound it either. For a dress watch i would be looking at a calatrava, an ALS, or maybe a VC. They do dress watches as a specialty historically.

I suppose its for people who want a dress watch and it has to be a Rolex. IDK

It’s not Rolex’s strength (dress watch) but I think they make a couple models that look beautiful. As others have said...most folks looking for a $15K + dress watch, usually look to other brands first.

I don’t own one but view them as real beauties! My problem with it isnth price range! I feel it’s waaaaaaaay overpriced! You can get another brand in dress models for less than half the price

The Cellini models recall some of the Rolex models that existed prior to the introduction and brand dominance of the Oyster case design. The theme behind the line is classic designs executed with modern technology and machining.

The Cellini designs are supposed to be dressier and less sporty than the Oyster designs and are only executed with precious metal cases.

It took me a long time to get comfortable with the Cellini line, and I have grown to really like the Prince models. The dials are absolutely amazing as are the transparent case backs.

like people mentioned before, if you want a dress watch and it has to be Rolex, then consider Cellini.......

but there's better choices out there, start at least with Cartier or Piaget, and then, JLC, ALS, VC, Patek

I like the Cellini..except for the name..which they thankfully removed from some/most models..
You get a screw down crown..rock solid reliable movement...full gold case back in most (they don't chintz on the gold w/glass)..5 year warrantee..
Over priced sure..and not a Patek..but you can wear them everyday..
Tough choice..Calatrava or Cellini..
I would choose the Cellini..because they are tougher..

they seem pretty thick to me, not that familiar with them but that is the impression i got. Tough is a weird criteria for a formal watch though when slim and elegant is what they are supposed to be about. I agree on the name though, just "Rolex" would be OK with me.

This Prince model seen in the flesh is a most beautiful watch a term that I don’t really think I could apply to any Rolex watch.
The Cellini Prince is a watch for really special occasions! I wish!

I went with the Patek Calatrava and the simplest model, two hands no date. To me, it is the ultimate dress watch that is both beautiful and understated. The Celliniis is probably a much sturdier watch but if I want sturdy, I wear a Rolex sports watch.

I think the Cellini range always have been a victim of the Day Date’s success, and IMO the design was always pretty poor and dated. I like the new Cellini cases though, looks like they came from the golden age of dress watches, the dials not so much.

except one is a dress watch and the other is a sports watch. No matter how casual people are today i just cant see a DD as a dress watch. Is a Nautilus a dress watch? Same sort of idea.

Dress watches are a tough sell no doubt as smart looking sports watches are filling that space a dress watch once occupied, like the DD and Nautilus. Im guilty, i don't have a dress watch.

Former President Obama is wearing a Cellini in his official portrait.

Thankyou! It makes more sense now. I guess that possibly given Rolex is a trust it may have to adhere to certain guidelines which may include maintaining the Cellini range.
It makes sense and acts as a bridge or a nod to the Rolex history.
