Clearly in a boutique-only world, the opportunity to engage distributors adds no value, but I will be interested to see how AP engages the watch media going forward. Presumably, the cost saved from foregoing SIHH can fund a lot of direct media outreach

Direct to consumer. It is the way it is all going. Across the board.

Wow, but I’m not surprised. I acquired my first AP this year via the boutique. It was a great experience.

This also stops the need to push out all (or most) new releases for the year at once, with some pieces grabbing the limelight, others being forgotten and yet others being announced half-baked, creating a stir and never actually appearing in the wild.

Without one event like SIHH, AP can now ensure that pieces come out in a more measured way

That having been said, it will be much less fun than having a flurry of novelties to debate and discuss.

Shame as was nice to have a day when we all saw their releases together and debated them here, but if it means models released more regularly thru the year then I'm for it.

and thats when i quit. About there anyway, but there is value in comparing and contrasting many different watches and brands that come out on similar schedules and the value is in the early reviews and live pics. Look at the users online here at Basel and SIHH, its like the Super Bowl for watches. Some people actually plan out purchases.

take away objective reviews and comparisons and replace it with PR media releases, don't let people see watches, and sell them online. Sounds like an easy way to release a bunch of crap without people noticing. Hopefully they cover return shipping

Didn't like it with swatch either, but Omega in particular already release watches all year long so i sort of got it however with these super expensive watches, Patek (hypothetically) or AP or RM or whoever its a lot of money to drop on a watch you like considering the risk there could be one you like better coming next month. I would not buy a Patek w/o seeing the full slate of releases for the year first, not a chance.

Yep. It seems one Basel thread starts the day after that years show ends. I kind of like the rush of new models all at one time.

They are going to lose some of the hype that SIHH creates but allows them to release the watches they want when they want not try to push eveything to SIHH maybe when they arent ready ala Grey Ghost.

my fear is that everyone will compete for one watch at a time. Premiums go up with everyone attention in one place, and when the next one comes out they get flipped and the process repeats. Any hot brand, not just AP. I just cant imagine a situation where year round releases are good for availability.

Think of the absolute madness that the 5522 created for Patek with a couple of off cycle releases for the exhibition. Everyone wanted one watch, at once. With all the focus on that watch there were a lot of angry Patek customers. The attention was probably good for Patek though

I think I will miss these trade shows. The concentration of new products announcement is always fun to look forward to, as well as the subsequent discussion and sharing of views in the WIS community in forums such as TRF.

But times have changed, and tradeshows in this modern world are no longer needed for brands that do not have to worry about selling and promoting their products. Social media and the internet is the new way of selling. I guess we all have to adapt.

Well, at least there is still 2019 SIHH to look forward to where AP will still be participating. Something amazing is coming this January.

Any particular reason we are to believe they aren't simply going to have their own keynote similar to apple in january 2020 and announce all of their new lineup for the year? All they need is an auditorium and some cameras.
