The search from SS to WG maybe

Hello.
I've been checking a few AD's and some brick and mortar grey dealers in the LA area and I know the deal. Don't want to pay over retail for a popular SS model but have been contemplating about going WG since I can probably get a deal on one of those (maybe 25k new?)
I'm a casual jeans and t shirt/polo guy 99% of the time but of course the president band on the daydate has always been the grail. But I'm thinking the smurf would probably match my low profile style better.
The last time I put on a watch was a Tag over 15 years ago lol. I really want the SS and can wait a few months if this drought might cease. Just wanted some opinions and thoughts from experts with experience. Thanks!

Agree, the Smurf is awesome. But, if your grail has always been the DD/president band, then check out a WG DD as well.

Or just buy a nice steel watch from one of our trusteds. Small premium perhaps, but significantly less than buying a gold watch.

If I were in your shoes, I’d buy SS to start and get used to wearing a timepiece again before spending $25+k on a PM model. Some sports models are available through ADs with less wait (e.g., Explorer I) or from Greys with only a relatively small premium (e.g., GMT II LN or a standard Sub).

If I were on the market for PM in that price range I’d strongly consider the WG Daytona on OysterFlex. The Sub and GMT models in WG ARE also really nice. My style is similar to yours and I think sports models work better for everyday wear than a DD.

Good luck!

I agree with the post above. If you haven’t been wearing a watch for 15 years you may not like the weight and the heft of a gold. Starts with stainless or one of the daytonas on a strap

Thank you for the replies.
I know everyone says to get the watch that I really want a since its alot of money. The SS models I like best e.g. hulk/pepsi/daytona/skydweller seems like a wild goose chase at msrp at this point so I was thinking why not just spend a little more for a president/smurf before they start locking down the PM pricing discounts in the future? Something about the current Rolex supply is making me feel impulsive.

⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️ Great advice
Also add...the DD in WG is stellar dressing up or in jeans

Traded my SS Sub and GMT for both models in WG. Zero regrets!

I’ve been in your shoes. I’m a shorts, flip flops kind of guy and I can tell you the most perfect fit for me was the Smurf. This watch is under the radar (which I love) and the weight reminds you that you are wearing something special. If you can swing it, don’t waste your time with the SS and go for the gold. I have had every modern day Sub C iteration both SS, PM and I can say the smurf is still my favorite. I now find that going from PM to SS is tough as the SS feels cheap in comparison.

If I could only ever have one for my entire life. Hands down, WG sub. No contest. It’s literally the bee’s knees!

One can easily wear a WG Day-Date with jeans and t shirt. If I where you and the DD is your grail I would not compromise with a smurf. Go straight for the Day-Date and slap that thing on and walk around with it for the next 15 years.

Smurf so pretty.

If it had the glossy dial of the two-tone, I'm not sure I could stop myself from buying one.

If Rolex wants to repeat its BLRO frenzy in a year or two when it's the sub's turn, a steel smurf would probably do it.

Get the Smurf first at an AD and see if a SS magically appears. Don't see an end in sight for present drought....
