Added a Rolex dress watch today...
I retired 8 years ago and my wife finally retired early this year. We now are traveling and socializing more, which she enjoys. I had thinned my collection down to 4 Rolex models (which is less than my wife). Well the need came up for a so called 'Dress Watch". A few years ago I sold a Day Date 118348 with a meteorite diamond dial/bezel which I considered a dress watch. After owning that for 2 years I felt (IMHO) that was too many diamonds for me (EG... TOO BLINGY). So I settled this time for a 18K YM 16628 with a seri dial this go around. I received the watch today and really like the look and was thrilled with the balance of the this discontinued solid 18K YM MOP Serti.
My 4 Rolex watch collection: Collector - Mint 16710 Pepsi lug holes and SEL Every Day - 14040 on a Rubber-B Strap ( Bracelet is unworn in box) Sport Watch - 116613BLSO Two Tone Ceramic Dress Watch - 16628 MOP Serti Dial So would you consider the YM Serti a so called "Dress Watch" If I add another watch thinking Daytona but not sure. In a word, no.
It's a sports watch. It's also yellow gold and too much of it to be dressy. Dress is supposed to be understated, refined and dignified. Cellini - Moon phase, yes. DateJust to a certain point but even then its an Oyster. And if you want to adhere to proper "dress" protocol then no date. That's not to say your watch isn't nice in its own right, not my taste, but I congratulate you on your purchase. And at the end of the day, if it makes you happy, that's what matters. I love my PP's and my Sky-Dweller, but some people don't and that's fine, that's why the world remains interesting, as we are not all the same. Plus this watch collecting hobby (illness) would be quite dull! Moving on, here is the watch I would suggest you aquire if you would like to buy a dress watch in the future. PP - White Gold - Calatrava - top of the game. (in my humble opinion) |

It's a good looking watch, but wouldn't call it a dress watch. Due to the large numbers on the utilitarian bezel, it is still a sports watch of sorts. You've worked hard and retired, don't worry about titles and enjoy those fine spoils of your hard work.

Looks good.
Although I'm sure some of our members will be along directly to chastise you for saying that's a dress watch. |

The concise answer is: Was was in the USAF (Crew Chief on gunships), then worked for USAF Civil Service in the Armament Lab, then became a Scientist (Missile Guidance) and then they promoted me to Management which I did not like so I retired with 34years.

Furthermore, the thread is not titled incoming. However, I will take what you said as "positive" and edit my initial post. As maybe if you are that cynical, you could extract negativity from my post. Rather than its true intent, of simply answering a question. |

And you are not hurting my feelings, you are just disappointing me. I thought you might have learnt how to behave decently from that other thread. |

Actually I took no offense to replies. Being an old fart I don't really worry what others say. I am happy with my choices I have made. With funds from my much larger collection pairing down I paid off 2 new cars a couple of years ago. Holding mens sport watches always has been the best investment. Only watches I lost money from was ladies watches and Datejusts. So on a positive note maybe the YM being a Sport Watch is good.
Thanks all: M |

Thank you for your service.
Congrats, that is a cool watch. Something different. I like your collection. Nice mix. The dress watch thing gets debated on here all the time. Traditionalist will say PM, 2 hands, on an exotic strap--the only real dress watch. I say wear whatever you like. I wear a Sub with a suit. I have yet to have anyone confront me about this....

Congrats on the YM!
Very nice collection you've narrowed it down to. I think a Daytona would make for a nice addition to your current collection, whenever you feel the time is right. Thank you for your service! |

Not a dress watch in the classic sense, but sure in most settings it can be used as one.
That said, I’ve always LOVED this reference! That dial is one of the best out there. Congrats!

The Calatrava I linked the photo is "my watch" its not my actual watch. (Quick google, due to laziness) but it's a Patek that I own... it's a bit in poor taste to flash my own watch off in someone's "HERES MY NEW" thread. Even if it didn't bother you, it isn't the right to do/say after deliberation + being made aware of my actions/posts.
Anyway lets drop this, and I apologise for derailing because this thread should be about you and your new piece! :) Enjoy it and wear it in good health! Quote:

Sweet
Solid gold watch. MOP dial. Diamond markers. Sounds like a dress watch to me! Even better, a sporty dress watch! Wear it proudly! Congrates on the dual retirement!
