Trip to local dealer, heard something interesting

Lunch time trip today to local dealer. Tried on 118206, 118238 & 118239. Sales rep was very courteous. He said something interesting and I'd like to hear your thoughts. For the 118238, he stated it was a D Serial (2005) but that watch was NOT pre-owned but NOT new either. He sourced it from another dealer who lost his license to sell Rolex watches. I found that strange. Could this watch really sat in a case all these years? Sales gimmick?

Sure,, it could have got lost in the shuffle over the years. But buy the watch not the story ,, it's not new so just buy it accordingly. High end stuff in small markets gets passed over sometimes until it becomes vintage. There's always a 2016 Corvette left over In 2018 at the small town Chevrolet dealer. Same principle.

It’s possible. Though perhaps a different era, my parents bought me a 16610 in 1999 or 200”. When I looked up the series (u series) that was apparently released in 1997 or 1998, so it was sitting a while. The precious metal pieces are quite expensive and also more likely to sit around. Like most on this forum when I walk into my local AD, there is no shortage of precious metal Rolex watches and I am sure many sit in the case for a while.

Anything is possible, yet a 2005 model should be serviced by RSC before it is put up for sale. So i'd demand a service to get the oils, etc back to proper 'as new' condition as a condition of the sale.

“Not new” as explained by their advising the watch was previously part of another AD’s inventory? That would be better described as “new old stock”? Watch still stickered and offered with all accompanying paperwork?

Your AD just sourced the one Rolex? What happened to the remainder of the inventory?

Candidly, seems a bit strange to me as well.

I wouldn't buy the watch if the watch was sitting and not running for 14 years unless it was serviced and discounted.
