Box and books value

Hey,

Was wondering how important is it to save the box and books of the watch?
When buying a watch out of your home country arriving with an empty box is a hard signal for customs that the watch on your wrist is brand new. So was thinking to just keep the papers and throw the box and books away...
How would it affect selling the watch in the future?
Can you purchase a box from a boutique if needed? Whats the value?

Thx

Mail box and papers home. It will be worth the postage for sure.

Post the box, keep at least the warranty with you. In uk 50 gbp is the free custom allowance... So put the value of empty box below 50.
Box and paper make a difference in resale value.

I personally wouldn’t be asking or advising on a public forum how to avoid customs charges

Technically incorrect

Gifts are VAT chargeable £39 and up
All others are £15 up
Alcohol/tobacco etc is charged at any value

And then there’s duty on anything £135 and up

Yeah of course it does as HK doesn’t have any import charges so why would you try and avoid customs?!

Put the warranty card in your wallet. The box and manuels can be replaced if needed. The value is what you place on them but for a modern watch about $500 for SS.

you want to throw away evidence to conceal a crime? Its like wiping a car for prints after you broke in.

Its illegal not to declare and pay what you owe full stop.

You are right. I sent a box back from Japan and marked it at Yen 5000...which round about the £39...depends on forex. It did arrive with no custom or Vat surprise.

I don't understand your follow-up comments. Foreign countries (i.e. not your country) does not charge you duty and taxes when you leave a country. They may charge you specific taxes according the state/provincial/federal taxes when you purchase the item in store (and in some cases that can be claimed or deducted back).

The only time you should get taxed or dutied again is at your home country when you go through customs there. According to your profile, you are from Indonesia so you should double check with what your laws are like at home.

But yes, box and papers do matter for re-sale value so mail them home if it is possible. Again, not sure about your home country but everything in Canada for example is subject to an inquiry (for duty and taxes) even if you bought the item from home. You can be asked to provide evidence even with your underwear (thus we have specific government paperwork marked with the items serial number before we leave the country and then come home...). It's whether or not customs choices to search and question you.

I think he’s wanting to know if he needs to show box/packaging on departure to get his tax refund. You do when you leave Singapore, but tax refund procedures vary depending on country.

But if so, sounds like OP is considering ditching the packaging at the airport to hide the new purchase and avoid possible duties on arrival.

I dont know many people who would buy an AP incomplete unless its a significant discount over rest of market.
