100 days of Explorer 214270

I was looking at the calendar and found out that today marks the 100th day of owning my Explorer! I thought I’ll write a brief review about my experience of owning it and hopefully helps any of you who are considering buying this model.

It’s my daily beater, I have other watches (Speedy, Apple Watch, Gshocks etc...) the Explorer is the most versatile among them, I wear formal suits, smart casual, shorts and sandals with it and it never fails.

It’s gaining around 1sec per day, depends on my activities on that day.

The clasp is superb, the EasyLink extension is kind of useful, I live in tropical country, so I leave it extended most of the time, it is contracted when I travel to colder countries or during sports activities. Sometimes I wish it has the glide lock as I find neither extended/contracted position fits perfectly.

It’s under radar, most ppl won’t recognize it is a Rolex, if you like to be discreet, it’s very good, definitely not a status symbol kind of watch if that’s what you looking for, however the crown on the clasp can be easily spotted.

I think it’s a great size for my 6.2” flat wrist. Many watch enthusiasts prefer the older 36mm Explorer, however I find it too small when I tried it on. The case is perfect, it doesn’t have the fat lugs like the 114060 Sub, I would prefer the dial a little smaller however, although it’s 39mm, it looks bigger than the 40mm Sub due to its large dial.

After all hardly any complaints, I have two minor scratches on the clasp and that’s it.

wonderful writeup and watch. I agree about the thinner bezel making the dial look bigger as a result. 100 days and only two scratches on the clasp are definitely an accomplishment by itself!

Before its purchase (and waiting forever to get it) I was initially worried about the 5mm 'coarse' adjustment not working for me. I did see a post where a user said it was either too tight or too loose on him.

But I was fortunate. When my AD removed two full links, it was a perfect fit.

It’s not hard to get this piece I guess, however when I decided to get one I spent 2 months checking out around 10 ADs in my area and no luck

A thought came into my mind when I read your reply, what if Rolex design the 214270 in 36mm with the current Datejust 36 case?

The tightness is subjective I guess, my wrist size fluctuate quite often and I’m glad I have the easy link, glidelock would be better but I don’t like the super long clasp

Thanks guys, I’m rather new in the watch game but I enjoyed it so far, 100 days is some sort of ‘honey moon’ period but if you’re considering buying this model hopefully it gives you a rough idea what’s its going to be like, I’ll try to write a 1 year review next time! Thanks and have a good day!

If the Explorer is on your list, it’s worth checking out the Sub no date and the new OP39
To sums up the traits of these 3 watches:

1. Sub no date- water resistant, glide lock
2. OP39- very sleek and handsome watch (especially the white dial), lower cost
3. Explorer- versatile

Only owned mine 7 days but rarely off my wrist. Love the under the radar vibe and exactly what I wanted in terms of presence. Super comfortable on my 7 inch wrist. Hope you are as happy an owner as I am.

Greetings from another very happy Rolex Explorer club member who is approaching 60 days with my Explorer. It is such a beautiful watch to me. In less than five weeks I had already acquired my two scratches on my bracelet ...but I bought to wear and this the workhorse watch for me to enjoy and to wear. The perfect watch for me!
