I've created a monster!!

It's not as bad as the title but i feel I must shoulder the blame !!

As some of you know I bought my son for his 18th birthday a brand new Z series GMT II Pepsi. It looks absolutely fabulous and is his favourite watch. He also owns a Rolex Date with grey dial that was passed onto him just before his mum passed away.

Recently he has begun complaining that all I do is either spend time on this forum or talking about watches. I explained to him that this site is a wealth of knowledge for watch affectionados and that I'm discovering new things every day. Such as, it's incredibly easy to change the insert on his GMT either at an RSC or by doing it oneself.

Well no sooner had I said it, when he's on the phone to RSC St James Sq. £22.50 + vat (15%) for a new insert fitted. All week he's been planning to take a half day off from work and pay a visit to RSC. Today was the day!! He has phoned me now 5 times to tell me how stunning the RSC building is, how helpful the techs were and how cheap he thinks the whole process was.

He paid the £22.50 and 10 mins later they returned his watch with a brand new black insert that apparently looks stunning. They tightened his clasp as they noticed it was ever so slightly loose. The gave the watch a quick clean (not a polish), returned to him his original insert in a steel case and promised him that should he EVER want to swap them over again just to pop in and they'll do it for him completely free of charge.

Basically in the last week or two all my son is talking about is Rolex and what a great new watch he basically has, will have and now has etc etc etc.

And so the MONSTER is born!!!

I want my old son back, the one who left his dirty pants everywhere, didn't tidy up, didn't put the toilet seat down and thought I was the weirdo who spent too much time with all you guys and gals on this site!!!

Where has that young man gone and why oh why did I introduce him to Rolex and TRF ???

Been there, done that. Congrats on your son's GMT. A classic to last a lifetime.
St James Rolex was a pleasure to deal with and one of the highlights, among many, of my London visit.

He sounds like a very sensible and well adjusted young man - not the monster that you describe at all.

Hi Charlie,
Yes there is a downside...........BUT

Imagine.....For all his life he will have the GMT that his Dad bought him for his 18th.
Some things cost money .....others are priceless...

Regards Mike.

Thanks all for enjoying the read and commenting on my young man in the Rolex making. The praise is not warrented but greatly appreciated.
We all do what we can for our children and laugh at what they do for themselves sometimes!
When I can pry the black 16710 GMT off his wrist I'll post some shots here on TRF.
Thanks again for the kind words .......you guys also make me laugh out loud at times !!!

Heheheh! I am so impressed that giving your son a Rolex has converted him to a toilet seat putter downer! Wow! Isn't it amazing how that a fine timepiece changes the man!!

Ah, the fruit of the Malus appears to have adopted a trajectory of rather high gradient.

Well done, Charlie!

What a wonderful gift. It's nice to hear that he appreciates the watch at this tender young age.

My father in law gave my husband a Rolex this year for my husband's 39th birthday. It is wonderful (TT black face Sub) but probably a bit nicer that what my husband might have purchased on his own (e.g. a SS Sub). He wears it proudly. Even nicer is that my father in law is happy to see my husband wearing it. My father in law had quite a nice collection of watches (Patek Phillipe, Vacheron Constantin, and one other high end watch) that were stolen along with some heirloom jewelry about 30 years ago, so this is the one really fancy item that he can pass along to my husband.
