Airport security

Is it safe to take a 2004 watch into the body scanner? Not sure how they work and don’t want to get magnetized.

Forget the watch, is it safe for people to go through a body scanner.

Me “I would like to opt out of the body scanner”

Tsa: “Sir it is completely safe”

Me: “what exactly do you do for a living?”

Tsa : “I work security for the airport”

Me “so how would you know if this device is safe? You’ve chosen a career in security, not the study of radio waves and scanners is that true...”

Tsa: “step right this way sir where we will pat you down.”

Me “thank you”

For your sake, I hope "pat you down" isn't TSA code for a cavity search.

And, sir, we will also need to do a body cavity search....

Initially read the last line to say “step right this way or we will put you down”

Several years ago flying home from Maine with my wife and 4 kids, my backpack with all my camera and video gear was selected by TSA for screening. I stood there watching a supervisor and trainee carefully lay out each cord and contents separately, and individually wipe down and insert the cloth into a sniffer machine. As the training session continued and my family boarded the flight...I asked several times politely if they could speed up the process so I do not miss my flight. I was told “sir one more question and you WILL miss your flight”.

I used to freak out so bad every time it ruined the first couple days of my holiday, then my wife found a scientific article, scary thing is a mobile phone call has a lot more radiation that the body scan machine. Would never go to America due to tsa so don’t know what they use there but in the south east/pacific it’s less than a mobile phone call.

Never had issues with mine but as others pointed out I'd be more worried about any damage to my body from the radiation than to my watch.

Never take them off at airport security. There is no need. I have taken 100s of flights all over the world and have never been asked to remove my Rolex even once.

Don't take it off there is no need and you are legally fine! If they want me to take it off they have to break it out of my cold dead hand

No they don't, they have to simply refuse you access and you will not fly passing through that security point. Simple.

Likewise, travelled countless times on aircraft, however I HAVE been asked many times to remove my watch by airport security. I’ve unwillingly complied but make sure I put the watch in my locked carry on.

People always say this...It's not always true. Just went through Dubai airport Terminal 3, they insisted I take it off, even after I argued. They said this is Dubai there's cameras everywhere. I wasn't going to win, grabbed my bag and took it back through, dumped the watch in it and went on my way. (I will add that other times I went through I didn't have an issue, going through Terminal 1 or 3. This time for whatever reason I did.
Then it happened again in an airport in Fez Morrocco...I was more prepared, put it in the watch case and sent it through.
You will see from other threads on this issue that it has happened to others, we are not lying or uninformed.

Might be the airports you go through but there are quite a bit on this planet that will insist you take it off. Not all security are first world trained to understand a watch doesn't set it off...or maybe they set the sensitivity high. For whatever the reason, to say NEVER is a matter of personal experience, not fact.

You will never win an argument relating to what a security officer wants regarding a procedure he's been told to enforce.

Yes, you're right, there are exceptions, fair enough.

When I fly I always carry a lightweight and sturdy watch case anyway, I find that often when I want to sleep its preferable to put the watch away especially on long haul international flights when I may roll over into a belt buckle or an aluminum arm rest. And once at the hotel it's the perfect way to keep it scratch-free in a locked hotel room safe.

This way, if TSA asks you to remove your watch your case is with you and can be locked in your carryon or backpack. So you're covered either way.

You try and get through Abu Dhabi airport without taking your watch off and they will give you a hard time.

I’d rather risk my watch wearing it through the scanner than it disappearing from the bowl after the x-ray machine.

I used to take mine off and put in my carry on bag. After having TSA rifle through it a few times I decide it was better to wear it. Being doing so for years no issues whatsoever.
