Platinum Daytona Two Years In

I’ve already reviewed this a couple of times, so this will be short. Two years in, wearing the platinum Daytona at least 29 days out of 30 and it’s still awesome! It’s comfortable, weighty but not in a bad way, and looks great. At least in terms of comments made to me, it flies well under the radar. I’ve had two comments in two years. I wore it walking the beach in Naples, hiking the mountains in Switzerland and all points in between. It keeps great time (about a 1/2 second fast per day), and I don’t really have any trouble reading it. Well, in low light, especially when the hour and/or minute hands are near the sub-dial at the 6 o’clock position, it can take more than a glance to see the hands. I will say that while I don’t yet wear glasses (except for 1.0 readers occasionally), reading the sub-dials if using the chrono would be difficult. But I really like a chrono more for its looks than its function. Color me shallow.

For me, this watch is the ultimate daily. Being platinum, it is not “in your face” the way rose or yellow gold would be, and is therefor appropriate for all situations. Having a metal bracelet, it is not a big deal to sweat wearing it at the beach. It is as rugged as any other Rolex, so while I don’t exercise with it, I don’t worry about it (other than taking it off to move furniture for instance).

Seems like the population of owners here on TRF is growing. I understand why, but also understand that a SS Daytona likely provides a large percentage of the pleasure for a small percentage of the price.

Here’s a link describing why I am so glad I didn’t wait for my SS Daytona ship to come in two years ago and instead got this one:

Here’s a couple of poor “action” shots on the beach and overlooking Lake Lucerne:

You already have the better Daytona option in my opinion. I wouldn't bother chasing a stainless at this point.

Enjoy the platinum. It's a killer watch.

I think knowing that I likely will never sell this, I don't worry about little nicks too much, and daily wear it the way I did my Datejust for the 30 years prior.

Thank you. I know you're right, but I've had the SS white one in my mind for so long that I can't get it out. But obviously, being frustrated by the difficulty in landing it is mitigated by getting to wear this one.

Awesome! Suits you well

It is my ultimate grail watch and hope to own one myself some day.
Luckily I see them a lot at work, so I often take the opportunity to put one on my wrist.

Fantastic watch :).

Sounds like you’ve worn it daily. How has the platinum held up versus stainless steel?

Superb watch. Unfortunately, my eyes are failing so I traded for a Smurf but really loved the look of the Platona. My wife hates me for trading it away, but I need to see the time clearly...

I hope you get one! And cool hearing from someone who knows these watches "inside and out" that it's your grail.

The platinum has held up fine! My only other Rolex has been the TT Datejust, and both watches to me look just fine -- after a lot of years and a couple of years respectively -- of daily use. Other than hairline scratches there's just a small nick on the PCL at 6 o'clock. I'd rather enjoy the watch every day than do without one small nick.

Ending up without kids certainly helped fund this purchase.

Thanks for sharing. I'm hoping to pick up one soon and it's good to know that platinum holds up just fine to daily use (as it should, of course).

Any chance you can post some pics of the clasp and bracelet? Just curious to see how it looks.
