Are you a watch collector or do you have a watch collection?

Are you a watch collector or do you have a watch collection?

There is a difference, a person with a watch collection will usually have watches he will wear and enjoys wearing. But a watch collector will hold pieces that are unwearable may be because of their value, rarity or age, poor condition or historical value.

If you are a collector would you give use some examples of your collection and the reason you hold those pieces?

Well, according to your definition, I'm a watch collector, but most of the watches that qualify me for that designation are not Rolex. In fact, none of my Rolex watches meet those criteria.

I would be a collector if I could afford to be! It's an expensive hobby to collect!

Following your criteria, I’d be qualified as a person with a collection. I love to wear what I own, including anything old, high end, etc....
I’ve never bought a watch for investment purpose, but I am holding (for my son) one that rarely, if ever, will get worn.

I think I have more watches than I can wear and keep collecting. However I wear all of them, most of them just a few times a year though. Not sure who I am with your definition.

Are you a watch collector or do you have a watch collection?

Everything I have gets worn. Period.

I’ve always been function oriented — but — all my watches are well cared for

I use all my watches and don’t consider them as investments. As my tastes change I sometimes flip into other pieces and, have never lost a dime, sometimes technically making money, thus being paid for the pleasure of having worn the flipped pieces:)

I've tried, sometimes intentionally and sometimes accidentally, to be a collector or maybe more accurately I've bought watches to own them without thinking hard enough about how much I'd actually wear them.

Some have been expensive ones that I just never bonded with but some have been "affordables" that I just never found the need for.

It always ends the same, if I'm not wearing it I sell it. I guess I'm just not a real collector, just someone with a collection of different watches to choose from.

I like this question. I’ve gotten to 10+ Rolex and now have two unworn examples. Some days I do want to wear them thou so we will see if it lasts.

I would call myself a watch enthusiast. Love learning about them, understanding how they work, admire the ingenuity, design, workmanship etc. across all spectrums of manufacturers. But don’t really have any desire to own more than I can wear - so just a one watch person now (plus my little Casio for sports.)

I have tried to own multiple watches (Rolex and AP) but have learned that I am a one watch type of guy. Just how my personality is constructed.

I wear what I have. I can't see myself ever owning more than 7, 8, 9, 10, 11...

Watch collection without a doubt. They all get wrist time and if they get scratched, oh well. That is what the RSC is for.

I realize that if I didn't respond a second time to this thread it likely would have fully lost traction (as it well should have). I just think the distinction is totally artificial. Whether someone collect modern wearable or elderly non-functional watches (or however you choose to make the distinction) means little as to whether or not they have a collection or are a collector. By definition to have a collection makes on a collector and vice versa.

I’m a little confused by these definitions. What about John Goldberger? He wore “the Unicorn” daily, even though it’s 1 of 1 and no one in their right mind would wear the watch. But, per your definition, he has a watch collection and isn’t a collector?

My impression is that this sums up many TRFers, so OPs definition isn’t black and white.

Yea, that’s not how I’d draw the differentiation between a watch collector and someone with a watch collection. I’d be more curious how other people define it and which camp they put themselves in.

I'm not too sophisticated , I buy a watch and I wear it ...
I don't buy what I don't like and won't wear... Simple as that!

On the modern Rolex forum most everyone will be collecting and wearing watches rather than investing in dusty safes.

I have 5 watches total, 2 of which are heirloom pieces that are seldom worn. I, however, wouldn't class myself as a watch collector.

Is there a minimum for a watch collection? I have 3, seems too little.
