Best way to protect yourself when buying online?
A week or so ago I posted WTB ad on TZ and yesterday received a response, the fellow has a watch I may very well be interested in. However, he is a new member on TZ with very few posts and not a known seller. He is in NY and has indicated references can be provided. Googling his name/email came up with nothing.
I've only bought one watch off the internet from an individual and the transaction was flawless, but he was a well know trader. I'm not enough of a watch guy to know 'who's who,' and unless I somehow happen to recognize the name, it's doubtful I will know who the reference is, his references could all be gold or the biggest crooks around. Obviously I want to protect myself and while he is a new member with few posts, that doesn't mean anything; I'm a new member with few posts. If situations were reversed, I would have a hard time proving to a potential buyer that I'm a good guy, so I can easily see both sides of the coin. Short of traveling to NY and meeting him at an AD to verify that the watch is authentic, what is the best way for a buyer to protect himself from a relatively unknown seller? Thanks! |

If the person i willing to meet you face to face..its much better like that...but if you dont feel comfy with the seller JUST DONT!!! there are real scammers out there and they do this for a living... only trust people who has dealt with fellow members... A lot of god prices out there but still you need to be veryvery careful......anything other than that JUST DONT DO IT!!...we can help you here and give you good refrences...just let us know...-Oscar

Thanks, BB. There isn't really anything that make me uncomfortable, I just want to protect myself. As I said, if situations were reversed, I could see someone being leary of dealing with me, even though I know I'm a good guy and wouldn't scam anyone.

If its an unknown with no history or references, then I don't think there are any short cuts. The only safe way would be to see the watch in person and to get it checked out either by yourself or if you lack the expertise, a professional. Anything else is would be a punt, which you're free to take, but you have to live with your choices if it goes wrong.

I know..but sometimes even though your a goodguy you still have to build your reputation to the people whom you are selling...it might be a long process but its worth it...we have a section here for good reputable sellers..you can check it out....
