Which GMT to get for my 10th anniversary

Hi all,

I’ve been lurking for a while now but since I’ve decided to buy my first Rolex and I’m quite torn on which one to choose I figured I’d ask you fine folks. I posted on WUS but thought I’d ask TRF too :)

I’m looking for a multiple time zone watch because I travel often and have friends and family in different countries so I’d like to keep track of their local time. I also wear business casual with a jacket often so I wouldn’t want something too sporty. I’ve settled on the 16710 LN or the 116710 LN. I’ve read different comparison reviews and threads but thought I’d ask for your current opinions.

My heart says the 116710 because it does feel like an upgrade from the 16710 in terms of refinement and wrist presence. However I also cook a lot and like the ability time use the 16710’s 120 click bezel to time cooking times. Since the 16710 is a classic in its own right, I was thinking my heart may catch up to my need for a timing bezel (the 24h bezel doesn’t have timing markings so I’ll have to multiply by 5 and divide by 2).

So I like the 16710 for its 120 click bezel, ability to swap dials, straps look better on it but I find it looks a bit demure compared to current Rolex GMT references.

I like the 116710 bc the ceramic bezel, wider lugs, and PCL makes more of a statement but I don’t know how much not being able to time things accurately will bother me.

Do y’all have any thoughts or opinions on my predicament?

Thanks!
Anthony

Great GMT movement, and with a ss bezel, can be easily dressed up

Welcome to TRF bud.
This would give you the most out of what you are looking for in your first Rolex all day long.
The 5 digit reference has a more understated tool watch feel and personality.

This is easily solved. God gave us two wrists for a reason. GMT on one wrist for keeping tabs on family/friends in 2nd time zone. Daytona on the other wrist for timing during food prep :)

In all seriousness a Chrono GMT would be perfect for you but without one in the Rolex catalog I'd go for the 116710LN.

Welcome!

Sounds like you prefer the aesthetics of the 116710, but the functionality of the 16710.

I agree that Nato's look better on the "tooly" looking 5-digit references and the option of swapping bezel inserts (not dials) is an unbeatable feature.

I've never owned a 6-digit but those are undoubtedly great watches

Tough choice! Good luck with that!

The 6 digit is (and was) my choice.

And then add the Tudor Pepsi.

Not a fan of the 6 digit line up...that said, the 116710 LN is the only one I own. The versatility of the 5 digit is unparalleled with really any other watch in the Rolex lineup. Depending on pricing, try each & make your decision. No wrong choice.

Wow - thanks for all your feedback and perspectives! I looks like I'm coming around back to the 6 digit LN. I think it do prefer the aesthetics of the maxicase GMT. HMM. Just wish my local AD would have both in hand for me to compare ugh!!

LOL!! Actually wow...what insight! I can just put my speedy on when I'm cooking and presenting. ::facepalm:: that probably swings me over to the 6-digit territory. Yeah looked at a few chrono GMTs and theyre all too big and I think itd be annoying to screw down the pushers when I go to the pool.

Yup I agree with both of you...itd be super nice to grab a pepsi dial and a jubilee for the 5 digit. I might look into trying the 5 digit first and trading it in for the 6 digit if it is too tooly for me. Hmmm...choices...

Unless you are planning your anniversary for 2020, it may be the GMT you “can get” rather than the one “you want”

I see you’re in Chicago, too. You might try http://www.howardfrum.com/ in the loop. When I was looking for my first Rolex last year, a Submariner, Howard had several 5 and 6 digit examples to compare side by side . I went with a 5 digit (14060M) and haven’t had a single day’s regret. Hope to add a 16710 one day. Good luck!

Just picked up my first Rolex in the form of a gorgeous 16710 Coke for my 10th Wedding Anniversary. My wife got a minty 68278 31mm for the his'n'hers. Whichever one you choose you will love it!

Nice congrats!! I tried offering my wife a Cartier but she likes her Apple Watch and wears her Constellation for more formal outings...

Where do you think you can find the watch you want for sale??

I presume you've heard of the scarcity of new steel sports models at retail.

Start with what you can buy ... 116710ay only be available retail in LN. great watch, but not as versatile as 16710 Pepsi (exchangeable bezel and bracelets.

Yup I’m not even going to try for a new watch. I’m looking at preowned watches.

Yeah 116710 preowned seem a bit easier to find preowned but yeah the 16710 is awesome but I think I want something dressier. I’ll have to try it on to make a decision.

You could not go far wrong with a 16710...totally superb watch! Don't rule out a 16700 either...equally superb!

Both are great but I prefer the 116710 and I think you do too. Go and get it, and post some wrist shots.

The question is what is a actually available to you at the time and are you willing to wait for it.

This shortage is unbelievable. Hopefully we see some ramp up in production at the beginning of this year. Not sure if there's any way of knowing when this will happen. Maybe we will see some posts pouring, showing new pieces :)

Yeah you guys are right - I just didnt connect with the 16710 when I saw it. the 116710 will be reasonably accurate most of the time for timing things so ::shrug:: the watch isnt perfect and neither is my marriage lol...so I guess theyre a good match.

I have my eye on a 2009 116710 which is the year of my wedding so it fits nicely (:
