New Old Stock Question
My father gifted me his datejust just over a year ago. It is my most prized possession, and I wouldn't sell it for 100k. He wore the watch every day for 30+ years and I remember it clearly from my childhood along with it being in every picture of him since I was born. Anyway, he got the watch directly from Rolex while vacationing in Switzerland in 1981. The serial number on the watch however dates to 1979. So my question is...is it unusual for a 1979 manufactured watch to be sold in 1981? Is a 2 year old watch considered new old stock? Or was it probably just sitting around in the back for awhile before it reached the display?

Internet charts do not accurately depict a watch "manufacture date", that is a myth, nor does Rolex make watches by model-year. Charts give an approximation barring actual data or provenance.

No, not at all. Some of the slow sellers sit around in the AD's display for a while.

DJ is suberp watch
There is nothing weird that a watch had been sitting
at the store being unsold in two years time.

That's not unusual at all.

I just bought a DJ last week that had been sitting at the AD for two years.. I think that kind of things happens almost constantly!

Doubtful the term “new old stock” existed back in 1981. I usually think of NOS as never sold example of a watch that is no longer manufactured.

Because you mentioned he bought it directly from Rolex, my mind drifted back to the days when one could buy a Rolex via the mail.
If that’s what happened, it is entirely possible that inventory sat at HQ awaiting an order while watches in the same serial number range went out to the ADs via regular distribution channels. Just another reason why the internet charts have Ike’s in them. Remember the charts are a summary of self-reported “first deliveries” bought at an AD. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
