Which Rolex to commemorate getting married this year? GMT? Day Date? Other?
Hi folks.
I am getting married later this year and am looking for a new watch to commemorate the occasion. Over the last year or so I've been thinking about getting a BLNR, however, just recently I've been exploring the idea of getting something else. I'm on two lists at an AD (whatever that means - I know there are different beliefs on whether there actually is a list. take it with a grain of salt) for BLNR. However, realistically if I were to go BLNR, would probably source from a trusted seller just for sake of getting the piece more quickly. With prices increasing (at $12-13K) recently due to rumors that the batman is going to be discontinued, was thinking about what other pieces I could potentially do at around the same price. After browsing around on watchrecon, I came across a few older day-dates. Wanted to take it to the forums and see what you guys thought. Would you do the GMT or a Day Date? For reference, my current collection consists of the following pieces: AP Royal Oak Silver Dial, a Panerai, Tudor Black Bay, Omega Speedy Reduced, Tritium Sub No Date 14060. Another thing to consider is that I didn't really care for yellow gold watches before but am opening up more to the idea. I think YG looks good on darker skin tones (which I do not have) but would love to see your pics of day dates! How versatile do you find the day date / your YG pieces? Here are a few examples: https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=633277 18238 - Champagne Tapestry Dial https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=648202 18238 w/ white dial. Yellow Gold. Was serviced in 2017, dial replaced among a bunch of other things (crown, sapphire, hands. etc.). Would this be a deal breaker for you guys if you are in favor for the day date route? https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=650322 18239 w/ silver dial & roman numerals. White Gold Thanks all - looking forward to seeing your responses. |

Get one that you really, really like, because it you buy it and flip it you'll be in for the sh*t storm of the century when your wife finds out.

it depends on what you prefer - steel or pm? if steel then you can't go wrong with a gmt, but i would not overpay for a blnr. if pm then the 18238 with tapestry dial would be my pick. i think with your collection and special occasion maybe switching it up with pm would be better?
as for skin tones, i think rose gold relies more on skin tones than yellow gold. i'm pale and have a yg day date and think it looks good, but would wear it even if people said it didn't lol |

Whatever you select, buy it prior to signing the marital contract. :)

I'd lean towards the GMT. You'll eventually want it again. I also kind of like the idea of getting a new watch for occasions like this. That way it's entirely yours to make your own memories with.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding
I’m afraid this is a choice we can’t help with much. If it were me, I’d look at a watch reference I’d want to wear every day, and something that evokes a special feeling every time I look at it. |

Thanks for sharing your pics! As for the day date options. What makes you say the tapestry over the WG or white dial choice? |

i personally feel like if it's the first, or only, pm in the collection it makes more sense to get yg/rg to switch it up and add some color, especially if it's a day date. as for the dials, white is nice too but it's a bit too plain for me and i feel like the tapestry dial completes the classic day date look more. there have been some very nice pics from some owners here that won me over with that dial lol

For me it would be a day date 36 mm no question. I have a tapestry dial version (pics below) and love it. This YOUR big day however and you should purchase what suits YOUR sense of style the best and what you will continue to enjoy wearing in the future. Good luck!

I agree with Roger - any watch you wear is perfect for the occasion. Just get what you like.

If you were initially drawn to the BLNR why look to other models? Is it just because the BlNR can be difficult to acquire from an AD?
If so, I feel like you have a perfect situation to get a BLNR from an AD and start the relationship.... go visit the ADs you’re on the list at (in person). Chat them up about Rolex, inquire about where you are on the list and potential wait time. Highlight this watch is to commemorate your wedding. As if there’s any chance to get the watch before the big day. Follow up monthly with said ADs over the phone or via email. Make sure you have a named contact to reach out to directly. I’d bet one of the ADs will deliver the BLNR for your wedding. ADs seem to love supporting purchases aligned to major life events. IMHO you have a better chance getting the watch for your wedding than if you just asked for it. Good luck!

I feel like there are few steadfast rules in life, but there is one that applies in this situation: if you have the opportunity to get a YG DD, you get a YG DD.

Go for the DD. I don't know of ANYONE who ever bought one and regretted it. It is the Flagship after all.

I likely go with the DD on the other hand, you've been eyeing the BLNR so why not scratch that itch!!!

No way to go wrong with the DD, I'll personally buy use, that will definitely take care of depreciation and keep some money on your pocket. There are some good examples out there as full sets that should do the trick.
