Datejust Dial Roman Fonts

Does anyone know when Rolex switched to the wider roman font (as shown in the first picture) from the simpler, more narrow roman font (as shown in the second picture)? The DJ in the first pic is supposedly a P serial number and the second pic is supposedly a W serial number. I have also seen the smaller, narrower font on watches that are supposedly S serial numbers. Anyone have any info or insight into this?
