The self driving future can't come soon enough.

I am so sick of driving.

No, I'm not talking about having a nice car that I might enjoy driving, but regular commuter driving.

My office moved recently and the company gave me a car and while my commute isn't terrible, I realize that at age 36 I hate driving.

Maybe it's American drivers. Maybe it's New York drivers, but I've driven in Maryland/Virginia and they are the worst I've seen here.

- Lights not on when it's raining.
- Lights off at night
- No one uses turn signals
- Slow drivers in the left lane (this I hate more than anything)
- Calling and texting while driving
- So many crashes and traffic caused by terrible humans that should not be behind the wheel.

Not to group them all together, but is there something about pick ups that attracts the worst most aggressive drivers? If I had to pick a single car category that has the absolute worst drivers, it would be pick up owners.

Sorry for the rant. I just don't want to deal with humans on the road anymore. I think for widespread use we are still maybe 20 years away, but it can't come soon enough. Traffic, accidents, injuries, and road fatalities will dramatically decrease. I can't wait.

Side note - I believe anyone who drives while intoxicated should have their license taken away for 10 years minimum. Way too many drunk drivers on the roads.

I like to drive, but driving in heavy traffic sucks big time.

I don't much care for long trips anymore.

I do agree with your list of complaints.

I'm not sure that self-driving cars is the answer, though.

Being on the road for the daily commute is incredibly stressful. I feel your pain there, Syed.

I hear you. It will be great when we get to the point where the default is self-driving cars, and one would need a special license to drive a car on their own. My biggest concern is the interactions of self-driving cars with human-driven cars, and the security measures that will be in place in these self-driving cars. The transition will be interesting!

dident you know that driving a car and freedom are one of the same?

On the other hand, continually creating technology to compensate for the inequities of dumbass humans only contributes to the degradation of society.

I love driving but I'm so glad I can easily commute by bicycle and train and don't have to use the car every day. The amount of stupid actions you see happening on the highway when it's budy

I've always enjoyed driving. I guess it represents freedom to me in some sense. I drive approx 40,000 miles a year and look forward to driving all over North America when I retire in a couple of years. That being said if I lived in NYC, DC etc. I would probably grow to hate it but I avoid those areas when possible.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy driving for the most part, where I live now. But I've also lived in SF Bay Area, LA, and Cleveland where driving is agonizing and there is no sense of freedom, far from it the car is like a cage.

Public health perspective. Car crashes resulted in over 37,000 deaths in 2016 and 2017. This is in spite of modern safety features. Unintentional injury (inclusive of car crashes and other trauma) is the leading cause of death from ages 1-44. After that, heart disease, cancer, and stroke take the lead.

I’m with you. Not only for the sake of all the aspects you mentioned, but also getting an hour and a half of extra time back every day of my life to accomplish something else (work, reading, face time my kids, browsing TRF, etc.)

A self driving car does not mean you lose your “freedom” as some others have said. In fact in gives you more freedom. You’re still getting from point A to point B, and hopefully in a quicker and safer way.

stronger law and order, which means stopping criminals driving cars, a much harder test with high speed vehicle control as part of the test, pavements for pedestrians, roads for cars,

a big problem in the uk is impersonation at the driving test from a section of our so called society, someone sits a test for someone else,

Hit the wrongdoers and the stupid, watch the casualty numbers plummet,

Dont take away my freedom, i love driving even if its a nuisance sometimes.

Definitely hit the nail on the head... Agree as well for the most part.

Yes , I don't think self driving cars/trucks are the answer as well.

I drove a semi professionally in the Transportation business for
almost 10 years across the 48 US Continental in all 48 states
including Ontario Canada...

Drivers everywhere are getting worse and there's no respect
for the fellow driver in front, behind or even next to you anymore.
I agree that pick up truck drivers are at the top of worse, aggressive
and offensive drivers... It's bad !
There are also drivers in the right lane driving way below the speed limit.
Also drivers hauling trailers driving slow without the hazard lights on warning
the car behind they have a problem actually
causing wrecks...

I believe a huge part of this crisis is drivers obtain their drivers
license in America way too easy without going in much detail...

Driving slow in the hammer lane should carry mandatory jail time. Why are BMWs doing it more than any other make?

This is another big thing I completely forgot to mention.

My commute is only about 40 minutes each way, but I would absolutely love to get an extra 80-90 minutes each day to sleep, or catch up on something else if my transportation could just figure itself out.

Again, I don't think we are close, but I hope I see it before I retire.

Drivers are only getting worse and there is little to no chance of them getting better when driver's tests are a joke and no one has any real training.

Who says a self-driving car can’t also have a manual mode for driving when you want to drive?

I enjoy driving, but not during my daily commute in traffic.

Having both options would be ideal.

There will definitely be a transition period where a driver option has to exist. Eventually we will get to no driver cars, but I think that will take a while.

I use a stairway for my commute. There's hardly ever traffic, unless the dogs join me.

I love working from home when I can. Even my short commute 25-30 minutes each way shaves off an hour of my free time every day.

At home my dog can chill with me, and I'm all set with an espresso machine and fresh ground coffee.

In an industry wide survey of driving consumers, over 90% enjoy driving and would not want a car that drives it self.
