Latest AD visit

Stopped in at the local AD here in Norfolk, Va. it’s part of a chain that is throughout Va and the Carolinas. Also in a mall if that means anything. We got to talking and I mentioned I wanted a Sea Dweller but that I wasn’t interested in the DSSD or SD43, but that I was also think Sub no date or Hulk. She said that she had a Hulk but it was going to one of their valued customers (kinda indicating they hadn’t figured out who that was yet). A couple things she said through the conversation puzzled me.

They only sell to existing customers. I’ve bought my wife some Yurman stuff there before but nothing crazy. I introduced myself but she didn’t ask for my last name.
If they did sell me one, they wouldn’t sell me another watch any time soon. Seems to be to put off flipping but the horological comment didn’t seem to make a difference
They don’t do lists
Rolex warranties aren’t transferable. I excused myself at this point since it was apparent she was full of it.

I know that place.. Try smaller ADs in areas with less money. In VB young fellas are packed with cash..

The new Rolex AD experience: Nothing to buy, lots of chit chat and BS with the sale persons, and walking out with a bunch of free Rolex magazines.

As Jennifer Lopez said: "Love doesn't cost a thing" at the Rolex AD.

What Seadweller were talking to the AD about? One that is long discontinued and thus wouldn't be able to sell to you ?

They might have been equally puzzled

Sounds like you asked about more than one popular watch and whether warranties are transferable. Any sensible sales person would instantly identify you as a flipper and treat you accordingly.

Well, not completely full of it, since a lot of it was falling out of her mouth.

Where do they get them from?

If you think sales people are full of it you should listen to the utter bo***cks that comes out of the mouths of a frighteningly high percentage of clients.

Every customer swears blind that the have lusted over a particular watch for years and they will never sell it..then it appears on ebay or Watchfinder within a week.

"I have just inherited some money from my Dad and it was his dying wish to see me own a Daytona"

"What is your best price, because I can buy it for 30% off at 'X' but I would rather buy it here"

"I have never dropped or knocked my watch, I just put my watch on one day and noticed that the glass was cracked"

In the immortal words of Dr House; "Everybody lies!"

This story is way too common. Uninformed employees and inconsistent practices by various ADs are seriously damaging the Rolex brand.

Beyond checking on inventory, I stay away from AD's that I do not have a connection with. On occasion, I will find a sales person who is both knowledgeable and polite but that is the exception not the rule. I have no issue with mall shopping but my experience has shown me the higher end the mall or shopping center is, the better the goods are. But with no prior relationship your chances of getting a hot watch are slim.

I don't doubt that either. It's just a shame to see ADs drifting in that direction too. But as you say, that's people for you!

I failed to read that on my way down the thread. More coffee needed. A good point that.

Not just clients, I find I hear similar statements in random watch related conversations.

"How much did you pay for that? I have a guy that can do 30% off retail on any Rolex!"

I was clear that I realized it was discontinued. There have been some weird instances where a couple have been found new at an AD.

This was in reference that the 114060 could be had with plenty of warranty with little premium over MSRP. I didn’t ask whether they were transferable. She corrected me telling me that they weren’t.

I contacted them about the hulk to see what their response was and got a “no we don’t have one”. Sucks for those who don’t want to flip the watch, but just want one at retail. Note: I know I could have one tomorrow if I paid a premium. I just can’t justify it.

You expected them to answer “yes sir, I’ll put it aside for you”?

Offer to buy a Platona from them and see what their response is.

She also specifically addressed this practice and said Rolex will pull a license for things like this.
