Rose Dial Black Bays Are The Reissue Submariner

IMO
Pick one up now.
Same thickness as a modern sub.
Rose Dial and vintage aesthetics.
These are the future priceless variants to own.
I had an extra blue I was selling. Not anymore.
I think owning the trio is ideal.
Only several thousand made in Black, double that in Blue, Burgundy more common but still significantly less made than its vintage brethren or a Kermit.
Basel brings us back to reality.

What about the BB 58??? That’s even more Sub-like. They should remake the whole line in that smaller case.

The 58 are being produced in abundance and lack the charm that the Rose dials have imo and on some wrists the 58 looks midsized.

You said more Sub-like. Aside from thickness, it’s the diameter and 22mm lug width that keep me from agreeing that the ETA Black Bays are real Sub reissues. Plus, lots of old Tudor Subs had the shield logo, including the Snowflake, which is the most famous of them all.

The best variants of the Tudor Submariner had the rose and smiley text. The Rose dials are the true replacement in my opinion. The modern equivalent.

I'm gradually getting convinced to hold onto my BB ETA blue that I was going to sell when I picked up a BB GMT. Besides the ability to swap out bracelets, it may wind up holding its value after-all

I’ll likely be on the hunt for a blue ETA in 2019.

I guarantee blue and black will hold value as well as go up in value. How much is the question? The Blue and Black have significant potential the Burgundy a decent amount of potential since the Burgundy obviously was in production longer.

Do it. After having one of each color I ended up keeping the blue.

But let's keep it a secret. Don't want the prices of these to go too high.

I think we are seeing second-hand price increases to almost retail.

These are just the classiest looking Black Bays.

The black bay black eta rose dial is one of the best value period. Super short production run, thinner case, rose dial and is really one of the first Tudor to enter back into the US market.

In relative terms the blue as well with around 5,000 produced. The Burgundy was produced for a few years but still in the grand scheme of things not many exist. I say get one of each.

Rose vs. shield has long been debatable, but it's the size that's the real problem. The best variants of the Tudor Submariner were smaller than even the Black Bay 58, let alone the regular Black Bays.

If Tudor continues to make Black Bay 58 variants, I think it's going to leave the ETA Black Bays in an odd middle ground. Whether that middle ground is desirable in the future remains to be seen. I know I'd certainly trade a rose for a more standard Sub case size and in-house movement (not to say there's a problem with the ETA.)

I have always disagreed with the size being an issue. People love Sea Dwellers, Deep Seas, etc. Meanwhile the ETA BB is nearly identical in thickness of a modern sub. My 7 inch wrists are fine with any BB but the ETA aesthetics have a significant personality upgrade imo.

I love that the black bay blue eta is selling used at retail price. Talk about value retention

The 58 just temporarily increased supply of Rose Dials but that will dry up and 58’s are produced in abundance. ETA production is over. Rose Dials are probably as cheap as they will ever be again. Prices will not go down.

Thats what I have been hearing here for a year. But I don’t see anybody buying an ETA for 5k, yet anyway

I just don't think any modern watch with an ETA movement will ever become a true collectable. Of the Rolex/Tudor family, perhaps Zenith based, but not ETA imo. Perhaps some Panerai ETA exceptions, but even those I don't consider collectables over the long-term.

The original very collectible Tudor Subs used off the shelf movements from companies like Fleurier and ETA. And as you point out the highly collectible Daytona’s use Zenith movements. In house movement seems to actually have the opposite effect and make the watches less desirable because when a company makes an in house movement they make more watches over a longer period to recoup the expense. ETA of this caliber will not be a negative it will be a positive.
