Sinn 356: my daily driver

I friggin love this thing! It’s pretty much been my daily for the past 16 months. Although it’s a bit thick @ 15mm I wear it everywhere and doing everything. Business, casual, welding, hiking...it works great with a bunch of straps with the 20mm lug width but I really just rotate 2-3 straps. I use a Choice Cuts Industries leather strap most of the time but like to toss it on some fun nato's to play with it.

I first saw the Sinn 356 about 2 years ago on instagram and quickly fell in love. At the time I thought it was a great bang for the buck of sporty, legible, tough and for a Sinn fairly stylish. I bought it pre-owned which came on their bracelet and an extra rubber strap. Neither of these spoke to me, in fact I thought the bracelet felt loose and cheap. Plus the design was modern but in a dated way. I ended up selling these but I'm not worried about the resale as it will never leave the stable.

Over my ownership I can't say I've had a single issue. It's kept great time and the case finish and sapphire crystal have held up amazingly well to everything I've thrown at it. I think I go easy on my watches and am cognizant of wearing something on my wrist however, I will also wear it while doing all sorts of activities where I should just take it off. Sometimes when unscrewing the crown there is a muddy area between the day/time positions but I've gotten so used to it setting the day or time comes automatically. The only other issue comes from the thickness, at 15mm it's large enough it doesn't fit under a cuff but I probably shouldn't be wearing it in that occasion anyway...Grand Seiko snowflake...I'm interested and ready to mingle!

I also love that it flies under the radar. 99% of the people that comment on it notice the strap and then have no idea of the brand. After buying it I found out my co-workers brother works at Watch Buys which I thought was hysterical so he noticed it right away.

That's a stunner, Johnny! Love my 757 UTC for the same reasons. The Sinn no nonsense tool watch vibe is ever present. And like you, love to experiment with different strap options. Sinn looks great on a variety of combos.

Timely thread, since I've been jonesing for a 356 lately. Love the case size and shape, although I'm personally looking for the UTC version. Seems hard to find! Yours looks killer on those vintage leather straps!

Look for a 356 with acrylic crystal and metal back which reduces the thickness a bit and gives you a little more vintage look.

My journey through Sinn I believe is a typical one. When you are looking for an under the radar, tough tool watch for $2-3k, people in the know often recommend Sinn. I know I do LOL. My first Sinn was U1, I really enjoyed its robustness and the fact that it was made from German submarine steel. I got into the Vicker scale and started appreciating the scratch resistant materials and appreciating the tegiment pieces, and all the cool technology that Sinn explores with; you know like the Argon filled cases, the humidity capsule, the specification around some chrono pushers can actually be actuated under water is mind blowing, though I would never try, and also the diamond pallet movement pieces or diapal to extend the time between movement service. Man I really love their tech!!! Lol.

Anyways back to the U1, I was never a fan of integrated rubber straps, even though many high brand watches utilize them, I prefer the look of traditional straps to accentuate the lugs. I too thought the bracelets are pretty heavy and clunky. In the end I did sell the U1 but looked into the PVD version and many of the limited releases.

I then found myself looking at 356 diapal or en EZM 1, but never pulled the trigger on these two as they are one the next price bracket for a Sinn. When Sinn came out with the EZM 1.1, I instantly fell in love.

I love the idea of a 60 min chrono counter not set on a sub dial but set on the main cannon pin. Super easy to read at a glance and much more useful than a 30 min.

I love how the 1.1 has all the tech integrated into the watch with a super clean dial. Th tegiment steel is super tough and even though I have worn it a lot, it looks brand new the day I got it.
