AD says old Sea Dweller is not dead
I was at an AD in Chester UK today. He was kind enough to show me a DSSD. It was actualy kind of cool but as we all know...a true monster.
Anyway - he said that Rolex will continue to build and sell the classic Sea Dweller because the DSSD is targeted (whether intentionally or not) at a different clientele. From what I gather, Rolex has figured out that the SD could be worn every day by your normal Engineer, worker, office type whereas the DSSD is not particularly practical around the job site. I mention this because I was in a meeting with a iar filter engineer a few weks ago, and he was wearing an SD. It was unobtrusive and to the casual observer just a steel watch. Had he been wearing a DSSD, it would have really stuck out. He had spent teh day crawling around in filtration plant all day as well, and I would think the DSSD would have been obtrusive in a way the SD would not have been. Anyway - just wondering if anyone else had heard that the SD will live on?

I understand the old SD was discontinued last year. It's also been taken off the official Rolex website.

Well myself have never seen anything official about the SD being discontinued they are still producing V case date stamp watches.I remember the Explorer was not on the Rolex web site back in 2000 for around 6 months but the Explorer is still with us.

don't think Rolex will admit that they made a huge mistake in discontinuing the SD...so they will probably carry on making it in limited qtys then release the SDII...well at least that's what I hope :)

I have seen an SD at all of my AD's and they can still be ordered from NY. I don't know if that means "V" or "M" I assume V but could be "M"...
You know - I love the SD so much - I am glad to still see it in the cases. I have no regrets on that purchase. I am fine with it being available for others to get readily. I know that whole collector thing last serial letter stuff... Truth is... It is an awesome watch - If I were Rolex - there is no way it would go away DSSD or not IMHO... I think all of us on TRF should have an SD in our collections - When I hit the mega jack-pot I am going to give everyone on here with more than 50,000 posts an SD... That might be awhile so keeep on posting!

As far as I know, it's no longer in the master catalogue. The final ones are filtering through, but don't expect them to last forever.

I hope the SD continues in some form. It seems that the ardor for the DSSD has cooled--it looks like a nice watch, I will need to try one on sometime. Regardless, I am a fan of the previous size of the sports line of 40mm. There is something to be said for not being too ostentatious.

The SD went up in price in Japan when the DSSD was announced. There was panic buying of sorts. Mea Culpa.
Today, Feb. 2009, a brand new SD has come back down in price. About 25% ~ 30% less than the peak. So I guess there are ample stocks somewhere. In fact the price today is less than what it sold for just before the DSSD was shown at Basel. Not seen a V serial yet. Mostly M. |

Probably will carry on producing until they run out of cases, dials etc.
