Rise of the Rehaut

Does anyone else hate the "ROLEXROLEXROLEX" rehaut? I have a 116200 Datejust and almost regret the purchase due to the feature. I understand the purpose (making forgeries more difficult) but either a) there has to be another way or b) it's simply not worth it. The repeating Rolex name is just...tacky and unsightly.

Hate it ?
I usually see it once - when checking a new purchase - after that, I never pay any attention to it.

I really like the rehaut on the ceramic series Rolex however I also like the plain inner ring on my pre-ceramic models also.

Why they added it, I dont know, but it's used as a security feature that they line up correctly and you get the serial at the bottom of the rehaut.

When it was first introduced, I hated the engraved rehaut, too, but then I'd only ever seen it in huge macro photographs.

When I went to an AD to actually look at a specimen, I thought, "Is that it?"

Three of my Rolex watches have the engraved rehaut and two do not. The casual observer is unlikely to ever notice and in actuality, even I never notice unless I take the time and effort to look.

It's barely noticeable here:

I'm actually with you. I'd rather it wasn't there but hate is a bit strong. Reminds me of writing around coin edges.

I don't have a strong opinion about it. I think they should do away with, as it was an anti counterfeiting measure that is now being well duplicated.

Imperceptible after a while. But I’m indifferent to its presence in general.

I do not hate it. I wish my eyes were as good as yours so I could get annoyed with it too.

Great to hear different opinions on this. I suppose for me it's very noticeable because I don't like it, and therefore my attention draws towards it. Perhaps "hate" is a strong word, but I don't know, perhaps I truly do hate it! My reasoning is as follows: Rolex is a strong brand, but is tasteful, classic and understated (at least not considering the rainbow Daytona, etc.). When I think of a Rolex Submariner or a Datejust, I think of a gentleman wearing his watch to work every day, and the watch is just about the watch and its purpose, nothing else. The ROLEXROLEXROLEX branding around the rehaut detracts from the pure, functional simplicity of the watch -- it makes the watch about the brand and not just being a great watch for telling the time. I also stand by it being a bit tacky!

I like the details of the newer rehaut and hardly notice it unless I'm looking for it.

I find that one annoying too, but only because it’s so hard to find it!

I see what you’re saying

Does the rehaut remind you of this??

Yep! There are actually threads on the forums to help you find it. Annoying little bugger though!

Hate's a strong word isn't it? Anyways, I think it looks beautiful.

Reminds me of the latin written on top of the facade at SPB.

I find it to be subtle and I rather like it, always have. It's a countermeasure against counterfeiting, unless they figured out how to copy that (?). Anyways, it's unique and distinctly Rolex. Cheers!

The most recent fakes have all the features including rehaut and etched glass, even cloned movements. It is the details where they miss. Color, alignment, font thickness, cyclops magnification, etc. You can’t rely on the existence of a feature to ID a genuine Rolex.

This is one of those things I was worried about/didn’t like before I got my Explorer, now I hardly ever even notice it. It seems as if it may be more apparent on some references than others. It sure isn’t on my Exp.
