Buying from Grey Market

Hi guys,

i have been looking for a BLRO for the longest time and i have given up.

finally got a job that paid me decently and i wanted to buy my first Rolex to celebrate a the age of 31.

Looking to keep this watch for the rest of my life and pass it on to my kids.

Spoke to many ADs and most of them require long-term relationships.

i am really tempted to purchase one of them from a grey dealer from Japan/UK.

What do you guys think about it? Should i stay patient or just pull the trigger? I know most guys here probably dont believe in paying above MSRP but im wondering if the BLROs will ever fall in prices.

The wait is part of the journey. I would wait.

I'm interested to know why you specifically want a BLRO?

Welcome to the forum

If you can afford the gray price I'd do it. You can't put a price on happiness and besides, it's a life piece so in the end, amortized over the years, its insignificant.

It's a helluva watch

what hit me was a convo i had with a salesperson today:

this particular AD will only put customers on the waitlist for sports watches roughly 3 years after the first purchase of a watch, and purchases have to be significant enough throughout this period. This seems fair as a business owner would rather sell these models to their best customers who keep coming back.

but for me, it doesnt make sense for me to purchase a few watches just to qualify for a waitlist.

Again, it’s all personal ...

For some, it makes sense IF they actually want the watches they are buying and are starting a collection. I agree it makes no sense to “bundle” purchases if you’re just doing it to get the reference you really want.

Your other option, is to try and develop a relationship with an AD. Visit with some regularity and get to know them a bit. You just never know ...

Great piece you have chosen there to be your first.
But it also attracts one of the highest premiums via greys these days.
Purchasing via an AD will be almost impossible short to medium term.
Yes the purchase price via a grey will be painful, but the joy you will get from wearing it will continue way after the price pain has been forgotten.

AD games again. If you have the wherewithal to pay the grey, just do it and enjoy that beautiful piece! I'm planning to do the same one of these days and I won't even bother with the AD nonsense.

If this is the watch you want, and the grey prices are not an issue, I would say go for it. If you have to buy any watch for a bundle it is going to make more sense to just go grey and get the one watch that you desire.

I think it is a wonderful choice and it is a spectacular watch to pass down to your kids.

Do not buy from the Grey Market. Let them go out of business so we can all get watches from ADs for once!

The 'Greys' are not going to be put out of business. They provide a service that many people are willling to pay for. They are here to stay.

I love the Rolex GMT Master II but, it is hard to get. There are many other good watches out there, I'm not fixated on just one. Think of an alternative maybe?

Most guys wouldn’t buy for more than MSRP but they would be more than happy to sell it for more than MSRP lol.

One doesn't match with the other, unless you are expecting your kids to sell it but then I think you have bigger issues.

If you want the watch its up to you to place a value on it.

How is any price more accurate about current value then where people are willingly buying and selling their watches, aka the grey market?

The market wouldn’t support high secondary market prices if folks weren’t willing to pay them. What that says to me is there are hundreds or thousands just like you who also wanted this watch and were willing to pay a premium. If you can spare the extra cash and are not worried about getting that money back in the future, I say go for it.

The whole "I don't want to pay MSRP but I want a relationship with my AD" is kinda BS. You'll end up paying WAY more to the AD in pieces you potentially don't want. If you're just looking for the BLRO, buy it on the grey and save yourself some cash, even though you are paying over MSRP.

If you can afford for it then go for it. Life's too short. Seeing that you're in South East Asia, it means you can wait indefinitely...

I think you have to go grey market for this watch. Maybe wait a couple of months to see if the prices on the secondary market will go down a little. The new BLNR coming into the market may soften the prices of the BLRO.

I keep reading this but don't believe it. So take this advice with a grain of salt. I know personally two people I work with who liked my GMT and after checking it out decided they wanted one of their own. Both within the past year and within a few months of ordering paid msrp and now own an LN and a BLNR. Personally, I wouldn't support the greed of the grays and would order one from an AD.
