Asking price for white dial SS Daytona has exceeded 25K USD in for sale section here on TRF. That is PM pricing for some models.

That's remarkable and or retarded. Such a shame for the industry to be turning into this.
I don't think there's a bubble and I don't think this will end. The mechanical watch is making a huge evolutionary leap in customer base and place in society.
The future will see values continue like this, sadly if I ever thought about becoming some kind of collector, that idea has been completely erased. Much better ways to spend and enjoy my money.
This watch is beautiful and I've actually owned it, but it is not worth $15k, at $9k it was already a stretch, but it's a Rolex, a luxury item and one that is fuelled by incredible speculation. People are not waiting for 40 years for a Rolex to appraise, they are willing it so overnight.
Just consider that a brand new Daytona is a little over 2/3 the price of a nice 1680 Red Submariner...weird times.

Agree the market has gone crazy. Been an enthusiast collector for about 25 years and there have been highs and lows, yet 2018 / 2019 are craaaaazy! Normally years ago I felt like one of the very few mechanical watch lovers. Now, so many of my friends are into it that it just has really expanded. As such demand has gone wild!

We live in interesting times.

Its where what is left of the watch market is these days. Its a totally different story for dress pm strap watches from most brands. Journe may be fighting the downward trend.

Watchfinder currently have a 16 month old, worn watch for £14k - as near $18k as makes no difference. Last time I looked, which was only a few weeks ago they were £12k.

I’m aware of the trend over the past two years, but anyone any ideas why the sudden spike? If it were just before March it’d be easily explained - it is being discontinued every year at Basel after all. But now?

I wore mine on a visit to my AD today. The SA commented on how the grey market was more bonkers than ever. I have my Rolex watches tracked on Chrono24 and I occasionally do a price check for info, including insurance values. One month ago the theoretical profit on my LV was 36%, which was frankly stupid IMO. I'd never pay that. The website then changed its calculation parameters, which dropped it back down to the low to mid 20s. I've just done my 4 weekly check and it's climbed back to 35%. It's nice to be paid to wear one, but even as a proud owner (who does not flip) I consider the situation to be bonkers, and not in a good way. But that's how it is just now. Ignore, play or pass. It's still our free choice.

In the end it's just a green sub. So paying 2x for the color green? (I'm sure I sound like a simpleton here and I understand the provenance of the LV designation...) but really.

On the other hand I get that one can really like a watch. I've had my plain old sub for 6 months now and the amount that I enjoy is way out of proportion to what it really is. But it was worth it.

I am beginning to think this forum has a lot of (mostly) newly registered contributors talking up prices.
The term pump and dump comes to mind more and more frequently.

I see why Padi56 has taken a step away.

Watchfinders are the worse example of the grey market.

They offered my friend £8750 for a 2017 Hulk in mint condition full set....and they will sell it in excess of £13k. Greed at its highest level.

It's like any company with multiple premises who advertise nationally, including on TV. What they ask and offer on certain watches is driven by greed. It's just not WF's greed.

I have negotiated with them on occasion. I thought their asking prices were too high. In December 2017 I got a new Polar from my AD with a discount that made it cheaper than a i year old example from WF. While their asking prices are on the high side, their trade in offers (at least the ones they've offered me) looked fair, and they were willing to be flexible. I don't flip, I was just trying out of interest.

So while I haven't used them because their prices are high, I nevertheless understand and acknowledge that they are in business to be a business, not a low profit failure or a charity. They have a big inventory, not all of it hot Rolex. And the greed that drives their more profitable sales isn't all theirs. If it was, they wouldn't sell anything.

If a high-demand piece (hulk should qualify) there are other greys (very similar name!?!?) that will sell on commission.
My offer was market value of the piece less 9% and your “wait” to get the cash would be as long as it takes to sell. I was told that this would be within a week but that was for a white 116500. Then a week later got an email to say they have a buyer ready now.
No reason to believe that the hulk will be longer but will vary. Of course if you want guaranteed cash today then you will take a hit of c.15%.
However your offer price seems low-ball.

I wasn't commenting on what they are offering to buy one for I was referring to their selling price which as one of the largest greys if not, the, they set the bar for grey retail price
