Is the Rolex submariner too young?

I don’t mean you have to be under 30 to wear the submariner, but I’m wondering if anyone else feels that the submariner is immature next to the GMT II.

I like the fit, looks, and feel of the GMT, however I don’t like having large numbers all around the dial.

The submariner and GMT are very similar in price, but when I see a middle aged man wearing a submariner I always think it looks a little immature. Kind of like wearing a hublot Big Bang. It’s preference, but I judge people the same way someone else might if they saw their broker/banker/doctor/lawyer wearing a flashy Richard Mille versus an under the radar platinum Daytona. Each watch, just like their demeanor, clothes etc gives me an idea of who I’m dealing with. That’s not to say it’s materialistic, but just deals with basic psychology. Availability heuristics; we all do it.

I’d trust my broker who is wearing a DateJust over one wearing a Big Bang for instance... money has nothing to do with it either.

Not a big deal either way, just curious if anyone else feel this way about the submariner vs GMT specifically?

I’m not exactly understanding what your asking?? But I feel both have their own unique look for their own purpose/complication, but this has been discussed here before many times.....Sub vs GMT discussions. Some choose by what complication they use most, some choose simply by aesthetics. I think if you “need” the complication, then choose accordingly, if not, choose which look you like better. I don’t think one looks more or less “mature” than the other. If I’m getting the gist of your question ??

If anything I think it would be the opposite. The GMT looks more playful to me due to the font used for the numerals on the bezel.

@ 50 yrs old, sitting here with my Sea Dweller on, and a flashy YG Submariner in the safe....I don’t feel either are age limited....with that said, I understand what your thinking. I say...if worn appropriately..ex: I’m in jeans, loafers, polo T-shirt, the Sea Dweller seems perfect at any age (IMO). As far as wearing a flashy YG Submariner or my YG DD40 for example...I wear them in different situations, with different attire, BUT...would interchange either one in either situation or attire. I don’t “dress up” so my watch collection reflects that (no dress watches).
I don’t think there will be much support for what’s “age appropriate” with any particular model, for the most part, here on TRF.
My thoughts are , for me personally, can’t speak for everyone’s opinions but,..wear what you like, act and dress appropriately. (well, at least at my age)

And no...I wouldn’t wear a 50mm watch at this point, but that’s my own personal thoughts and tastes.

I feel you. Not sure anybody but the guys who hand out on this forum would make the connections you have - but I agree. Strangly enough, I just turned 60 and purchased a GMT after wearing a two-tone date-just for the last 35 years. Passing that onto my son.

Sorry, only read the OP’s post. You are going to judge someone’s trust on the type Rolex they wear? Not following. If you owned a sub at 30 and wore it because it was age appropriate, would you need to sell/be compelled to sell it when 50 because you are too old to wear it?

Yes. Has nothing to do with age, just gives me clues to what your other preferences, taste, and personality might be like.

I recall when I was in my 20s and before getting my first quality watch, a Rolex owner told me that a guy under 40 should wear one of the professional models, and over 40s should wear a Datejust.
That may have been the case once upon a time, but times have changed and I certainly don't think such logic applies in today's more casually-dressed world.
That said, the comment stuck and I still think of Datejusts as being for folk older than myself - despite now being in my 50s!

If you’ve had differing views with your spouse, father, co-worker, son, friend, foe... you’ve judged them. Remove the negative connotation in the phrase “to judge”

that's an entirely different topic than "is the submariner too young". the pcls on the gmt make it a bit dressier so i understand how it would make it seem more grown up vs a sub so i get what you're saying, and its just like how you can get a sense of someone's personality by the car they drive. i don't think rolexes are age specific though but what you're doing is judging people based off their entire look, like when someone wears a diver with a suit, to me it looks out of place so i get a certain first impression but if that person was wearing a hublot with a more casual outfit i wouldn't judge them negatively

with that said i don't think you should care what people think. i'm young and wear a DD with casual clothing, people probably think its fake but i don't really care. i don't believe in the whole "datejust/day dates are for when you retire" or subs should be worn by people in their 20s

IMO the ceramic super case professionals have a younger look to them than the five digits did. One of the reasons I went with a 214270 over the 114060, and I'm "only" 40 yo. However that's just my personal taste and people should wear what they like.

Of course we've now veered from the OP's point that one watch with a ceramic bezel and super case is appropriate for middle aged men whereas another watch with a ceramic bezel and the same super case is not.
