Icon5 Gold scratch easily?

Considering buying a tow tone Rolex, and am curious as to how durable the Gold is to scratching? Seems like the Jubilee would show fewer scratches, but am somewhat interested in a two tone Sub.

It's resistance to scratching is relative to the materials you put it in to contact with.

The jubilee will show less scratches due to the shape of the links.

Don’t worry about the scratches... just wear & enjoy! I understand your concern, but you really don’t need to worry about it!

Worse than the scratches, gold does an awful job hiding dog slobber. Otherwise, it's fine.

Yes, the polished gold center links will show more wear than the brushed SS end links next to them...

The advantages of gold far outweigh the disadvantages. I wore a TT Sub for almost 20 years and it looked no worse than any other daily worn watch. Currently wearing full gold now and never going back.

What are the advantages of gold? Does it age well and keep its lustre etc?

And to answer the OP's original question, yes its softer than steel but you need to start thinking of scratches as a "patina", like the wrinkles on an ageing leather, or how a fine suede looks better with age... Its part of the ageing process basically of the watch and does indeed give it character. Its a bit like swirls on car paint too, you can try and minmise them, but you will always find some, no matter how careful you care, its just a fact of life...

To achieve "zero scatches ever" then keep the watch in the box forever...

Just curious, but what would a well worn TT Sub look like?

I am not hard on watches, but the ones I do have show a few very minor hairline scratches on the clasps. I am sure they could be polished out, but not a big concern. Now if I had these same hairline scratches all over the Oyster band, then my OCD might kick in and drive me crazy.

In terms of Vickers hardness, stainless steel is 60-80% harder than 18K gold or platinum, depending on the specific alloy and annealing. In my experience, however, there is very little difference in how they respond to abrasions in real life use.

A little Simichrome metal polish cleans up gold pcl's nice. Just tape off the satin SS parts of the bracelet. Or wait until service time. Any metal will scratch, be it gold, stainless, or platinum. Just wear and enjoy. Life is too short to stress over scratches on a watch that you wear to enjoy.
