Sold the Harley, picked up a Sub
After four years of ownership, it was time to say goodbye to the old Panhead. Spent many an hour restoring the old girl, but she hasn't been on the road for a while, so I figured it was time for another enthusiast to enjoy the ride.
Now with a bunch of cash in my pocket, it was time to source a 5513 Meters First Submariner. It didn't take long to find this fine sample.....a 1.8 mil serial, unpolished in pretty good shape. I wasted no time to close the deal. Now the question.....do I restore the watch (including a polish), or just enjoy its patina? It has recently been serviced and runs perfectly. Thoughts? |

Enjoy it as it is for the moment.
If in a while you feel it needs extra TLC then the RSC is the only place I would send it.

Leave it as is, if service is needed send it to an independent watchmaker for service only. Congrats on the sale and the new watch.

Awesome. Unlike the Harley you can use it everyday, regardless of the weather. It's funny how most people simply won't understand a trade like this.

I would leave it the way it is. Enjoy it. If you ever decide to sell it, that patina will definitely make it an easier sell and fetch a higher premium.

Great pickup but that watch looks polished. The lug edges are all rounded.
Serious question: is rust acceptable in a vintage watch or is that considered "patina"?

It was an enjoyable and educational restoration over 4-years.
Time for a new project. |

100% polished. You were sold something that was inaccurate in its description.

Beautiful watch! Do you have a RSC near you? I would recommend sending it in, or get it looked over/inside by a highly skilled watchmaker.
Congrats... |

Congratulations!
I agree in removing the rust. Other than that, I would not let anyone touch anything. |

Any intel on the the impact regarding the fact it has been polished vs paying a price of X on the assumption that it has never been polished ?

I'm not an expert by any means but my guess is that the watch has been polished. If it was me, I'd send it to LA Watchworks and let them do their magic. It will look like the day it came off the assembly line.

That rust would bother me.
I was once sure I was going to get a vintage sub. Then I realised that the new ones are better value if it's not going to be used a s safe queen due it being in perfect condition, which this is far from it. But, if you are happy, that's all that matters. Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
