Rolex 2009 Releases with DLC coating

Ok, a question that looks like a statement.

After drooling over the Blancpain DLC "Black Knight" and Daz's DLC Panerai I think it's time that Rolex release a Sport watch with black DLC coating.

With the DLC coating I have been told that even scratches (though not gouges) are black.

I am thinking that a new sub option, one taking the bezel contrast and dial effect from the BP, would be a very interesting Rolex and would generate frenzy amongst collectors as well as frowns from the old farts.

Prohunter did very well from a half hearted (IMO) unofficial PVD modification so why wouldn't Rolex's designs not hit the mark?

What do you think?

I doubt it, i don't know why but Rolex seem to feel they don't need to try new things as much as others, if you look at the PVD models, especially DLC they sell very well, Blancpain have released their version and it's sold out, Panerai release their versions and they sell out instantly as well.

If Rolex wanted to sell more then a new submariner DLC would be a winner, it would also allow them to stop with the LV, although Rolex like to keep things in-house so how they'd do this is a mystery at present.

they will never do it, the last time they tried to be "modern" and go with "the times" and came out with "large" watches they were a miss... the YM2 is a dog and the DSSD is slowly becoming a dog too.

I have to disagree. If anything, the YMII is gaining popularity each year. There was a lot of hype for the DSSD in the beginning and it seems to level off b/c Rolex made the appropriate number. Would you be happier if there where none to be had and the secondary market is through the roof?

Oh yeah, and the economy is in the tank...

With that being said, I don't think Rolex will do the PVD. It would be to hard to service and get back to perfect.

From what I see Rolex is very conservative and they do what they want. They do not bow to market pressures and they do the dictating!!! Could they produce such a watch, YES, but will they probably not!!!

cause just when you thought you knew the brand - BAM !
You get socked in the gut and a black DAYTONA is released at BASEL from ROLEX and you all of a sudden are feeling compelled to sell your fragile ceramic GMT for a new DLC DAYTONA !
I've seen it time and again with ROLEX already; they're unpredictable to say the least; and the "dogs" aren't goin anywhere anytime soon !

Thanks,
Randy

I'd love to see Rolex offer the option of PVD or DLC coating for their sports watches but I think it's unlikely, purely because Rolex is such a quirky, against-the-grain-type company that they probably won't want to follow the rest of the crowd.

So if I were to assign a probability that the company actually will announce PVD/DLC options at Basel this year, I'd say it'd be less than 5 per cent.

I disagree about the DSSD, it is very popular on another forum. It might not be popular in here but there are a lot of proud owners. It's not hype when the improvements of the watch says a lot. Best sports watch out IMHO.

As time goes on and the older case Rolex's phases out; the DSSD will be the most popular Rolex sports watch. With the upcoming change to the SUB, these 2 models will be neck and neck as the most popular models like the 16610/16600 combo.

C'mon guys.

Imagine the Sub bezel with the grey markings and the dark lume marker insertion as per the BP. Add a little red into the mix and we're all set.

I really can't vote because I have no idea what is DLC.

As I understand it PVD is a flawed technology and the coating wears and results in a very poorly looking botched finish.

Rolex would never lend themselves to manufacture a model that resulted in such a finish. If DLC was a far superior finish then there may be a case for Rolex to adopt that technology, but again you know, nothing but the best for Rolex as there is too much at stake with it's reputation if they produce something that receives condemnation for having an inferior durability

And you can take that to the bank!!!!

I think the Pro Hunter version of the Millie looks amazing. If Rolex were to release their own version, it'd be my grail.

I voted no, cause like Rolex I'm pretty conservative and appreciate that they don't go with fads or make rash fashion decisions. I pay extra for their top notch craftsmanship and their steady handed approach to improvements. I'd rather wait for choice upgrades at slow incriments than have them chasing trends. I like the look of the balck coating but even if it didn't wear poorly I still prefer SS or 18K JMHO

DLC is a type of coating applied by the plasma vapor deposition (PVD) process. Hydro-carbon atoms are deposited in a very thin but very hard layer. Not so hard that you can never scratch it though (like a parachrome bezel ?) and that's why I agree Rolex will stay away from it.

Hey, they don't even make or license tritium tubes to make decent lume and you expect this?
