Opinion on Seiko Mods?

There is a growing community around Seiko modding. Wanted to get your opinion?

Does it promote a healthy watch industry or is it a detriment?

What say you?

I think it's great. A lot of creative fun for watch fans, and probably great business for Seiko too, with people buying watches to mod that they wouldn't otherwise buy.

I think it is fun and for those who want to take the watch owning experience somewhere else it seems to work. I do not own any but would be open to buying the right one.

A growing community? It’s been around for quite a while now.

I enjoy a good mod challenge and was hooked once I learned how to remove a movement. It’s been a fulfilling hobby for me. But then I've been known to mod just about everything I own.

I think its great. You get a watch that is uniquely yours. I plan on building a complete watch from the ground up soon. Obviously not machining parts myself but you get the idea.
It keeps my love for watches alive without having to throw down thousands of dollars or year long waiting lists. I can build a decent looking piece for under $500 and pass it on to friends once a new project comes around.

I think it's fabulous. Dan Pierce has some absolutely outstanding watches that he has modded. Stunning.

This was the 1st one. No lume at all. 100 only made I think.

I love that the Seiko community (and Omega I might add) looks favorably on personalizing one's watches. In the Rolex community you're pretty much crucified for even suggesting a mod.

Ive modded three of my watches
Im in two minds on this. Alot of guys buy fake cases/watches etc from “homage” brands and put an aftermarket “seiko” branded dial effectively creating a franken fake

Imo modding is healthy to the watch community as long as we use generally oem or at the very least, original parts.

Agreed. I love that people are willing to play around and make them unique. I will say that I've never actually met someone that's willing to mod their Omega though. Some of those guys are equally as freaky about Frankenmega anything.

When I took my Marui Reduced in and had a non-standard movement replacement I got a few "Oh, that's a shame. It's clear the end times are among us" kind of comments.

I’m just saying that because I did the Mitsukoshi dial and hands conversion to my Speedmaster and have gotten zero negative comments. In fact my local boutique tells me they only wish they were allowed to do such work. Dod the adjustable clasp add too.

Seiko mod's are the norm, but not for luxury brands

I haven't modded my Seiko, but I really like it as is. Maybe if I get another I might attempt some modding.

* As mentioned above, it's frowned upon to mod a Rolex, but I would be very, very tempted to take a beat to hell Sub (that's well below market value due to condition) and have it (gasp) polished and modded into a Milsub with sword hands... Because I want a real Milsub BADLY (not a homage Steinhart, Squale, etc.) and I know I'll never get one.

I tend to agree with this for anything other than a simple strap/bracelet swap.

If you go to Thailand or the Philippines one day, the corner watch techs can overhaul a Seiko 7S26 in 90 minutes. Mod the hands and face in less time. Or buy a modded Seiko or Citizen diver for less than a RubberB strap.

Mod away I say. It doesn’t take much by way of tools to get started and parts, both OEM and aftermarket, are readily accessible. This is one of my favorite mods, taking an 009 and changing every part save the mid case and chapter ring. BTW, I also used to mod my Omega and Rolex watches but have not done so in a while.
