Watch happiness and stress...

I own a new Rolex, in fact I have bought 3 this year total. I own a couple nostalgic pieces from 10-15 years ago that have a worthless $ value and a couple smart and sport watches. I recently bought a $250 Seiko SKX007 and for some reason cannot take it off.

I wear the Seiko everywhere, the beach, shower, gym, work, etc and I don't worry about it at all. I look at it as a tough, inexpensive piece that looks great. I love it and it brings happiness each time I look at it like no other watch has. I love it so much I bought my GF one and a comfy strap for her.

Looking at my Rolex makes me happy and feels good but wearing it causes some stress. I worry about damage, scratches and the "watches" health more than my own. The people that walk past me, the desks, the dirt, etc. Sometimes I would rather not wear it.

What I discovered is the good people on this site that alway say "it's made to be worn" when referring to a Rolex are correct. I am not there yet but one day I hope to wear my Rolex like my new Seiko where I am enjoying it more than being worried about it.

Sometimes there is snarky remarks made to people that post about scratches or dings and as much as this is silly, it's also not fair. Many of us Rolex owners are not rich and buying that first AK or DJ is literally the most expensive thing we ever bought. For me, it was a 15 year dream and I made it a reality. For many, they will only ever wear and own one Rolex so lets understand the pride and care these people take on their first Rolex.

So in closing, I can say I appreciate the people on here that wear and enjoy their watches for what they simply are... a watch.

Whatever reasonable and sometimes unreasonable damage will be fixed at service. I was knocking down an outdoor kitchen with a sledge hammer with mine a few weeks ago and didn't think twice about it. I'm not rich by any means, however a watch is made to be worn in my opinion.

My Rolex watches will likely be around long after I am gone, and not worth fretting over dents, dings, scratches, etc.

Please don’t make your watch a museum piece as it’s meant to be worn, I currently have a very tiny collection of watches that have a high monetary value to me but I don’t focus on that I focus on wearing each piece and enjoy it for what it is, will the watches get scratches yes they will but I try to do my part to ensure to keep it to a minimum but it’s going to happen and in fact already has but it’s impossible to avoid and scratches can be addressed at the recommended service interval and it will be like brand new if done correctly.

I personally don’t work in a industrial environment and most if not all my small scratches have occurred at my desk just doing my normal job but I try to be conscious of what I’m doing and so far the damage if you call it has been minimal so I say enjoy your watch or you could wear the less expensive piece all the time and just wear the pricier piece on special occasions but what fun is that

At the risk of being snarky buying 3 Rolex in a year means you are fiscally rich by almost every measure.
But, more to your point. I get what you mean. The first high end watch I bought was an Omega. I never wore for fear of banging it up and received zero enjoyment. I joined the made to be worn club and enjoy them infinitely more.

The watch is owning you. If you had to spend outside your comfort zone then you probably will always worry about it. These are luxury goods, not a investment and should be viewed in proper context of a lifestyle extension. You will either get over it and get comfortable with wearing it or grow to resent that much money in a object you cant fully enjoy and sell it.

Comes down to your own comfort level. I personally don't buy things to not wear or use them, so I wear my watches essentially everywhere.

If I were in your shoes, and had just checked the box on a 15 year dream - can't think of a minute where I wouldn't be wearing the thing to celebrate that.

I am assuming this is just your personality. Everyone is different. Some folks also worry and obsess over their expensive cars, clothes and other personal possessions.

I wear my watches and drive my cars like they were intended. If something happens to them I will simply get it repaired or replaced.

Compared to the Daytona collection someone posted on here a few days ago I am no where near this. I bought one for me, the GF, and then sold one. :)

I wear mine like it was intended. For example, I have an Explorer II as a semi-recent pickup. I wear it everywhere. I take it places, I do things with it, I swim with it. I also have an 18 month old son that will hopefully know what it is as he grows up, and I can give it to him when he hits a milestone (graduation, birthday). He will either wear it and look at it knowing that all the dents, scratches and dings where made during the life we've had together, fondly remembering after I'm long gone.

Or, if he is ever in a tough spot and must part ways with it, can fetch a sum that makes his life easier. Either way, I'd be happy with both.

Same can be said for any watch that can stand the test of time. I like to keep my things in good shape, but I don't go out of my way to put wear and tear on them. Like everything else, it's all relative.

It is my personality... I grew up with nothing extra. Like all of us I worked very very hard and overcame many challenges out of my control. When I first entered the working world ages ago I bought a nice looking Guess watch and cared for it like it was a Rainbow Daytona. My first car was the nicest Honda Civic on the street.

This carried over into my more mature adult life. My 2014 Audi A4 still looks brand new, my home, etc. But yes, some of this gets in the way of enjoyment. I get it from my mom I think lol... She went about 30 years living without to provide for me and my sister. Last year I helped her buy a brand new Honda Civic as a retirement gift and it's like her Rolex :)

My overall point to the point was I do admire the watch lovers that buy, wear and enjoy it with full happiness. I hope to be there one day with Rolex but I am not :)

Nothing wrong with being cautious when wearing your Rolex in my opinion.i own a 1989 date Subby, and my day doesn't feel complete unless I have worn it at some stage.i wear a Seiko quartz solar chronograph as a daily hack,but can't wait to wear the Rolex when relaxing and doing general duties.The Rolex demands to be worn..try wearing it more often ,,you might even like it

I can appreciate the care you are taking of your watch. But I am right there in the front with “wear your watch club” I dug holes in the backyard, swam in the ocean & pool, went to meetings and even changed diapers with my watch on.

I feel the same way you do about the Seiko as I do about my Omegas, Rolex and any other watch.

Yes, they get scratched, dinged and dented. But if I worked hard to drop that kind of cash on a watch, I better damn well get a return in a form of enjoyment. I am no reckless with it. But I do enjoy the hell out of it.

You have 3 Rolex watches that you just purchased. Unless you are buying on speculation to flip them later on as NOS. Break open the safe and wear them.

I’ve never owned a Seiko but there are thousands of threads about how great they are. The price point makes them that much more popular. Enjoy that one to the fullest too.

Great reply. I should clarify... I’ve bought 3 Rolex this year. 2 for me and 1 for GF. I sold on of mine. I said this just to point out I’m not afraid to buy them.

All I can say is that life is short. Do whatever makes you happy. If you enjoy keeping it pristine and just wearing it in the house, nothing wrong with that. But I think that if you start wearing it your level of enjoyment goes way up.

I can sympathize with this sentiment, from my early collecting days when I was scraping to afford some nice watches. Every mark would hurt deeper than a physical cut. But with a little more life experience, the condition of my watches are amongst the lowest priorities in my life. They're toys, material goods. I mark it, what does that mean? $100 lost in resale value? Even if it was thousands, it is just money and can be fixed. Many other things are far more important.

I take care of my watches, don't get me wrong. Many people comment that my watches look pristine, but they aren't - I am just careful. But there is a fine line where it takes over you and starts owning you and that's unhealthy. If the watch owns you, you're much better off just selling it and wearing something else, in my view.

I speak from the bottom of my heart, that I've gone through a number of health issues (including after being hit by a car and suffering from depression) and I think one is very very fortunate and lucky to worry about the "health" of watch over their own. After those health issues I've been through in the past, and the endless darkness I felt I was in, worrying about the condition of a watch (or money, etc.) is amongst my lowest priorities in life.

Again, I don't mean to be snarky, and please don't take this as criticism or advice. Just expressing my 2 cents.

Yeah man, do what works best for you. I wear all my watches and nobody likes scratches but it doesn't stop me from taking them out. But to your point, some of my shoes (even cheap sneakers) are for "going out" only.

When I say life is short, it doesn't mean you should wear it. It means do what makes you happy.

I was gifted my grail Rolex in March. And ironically up until today I basically said F IT. I always wanted this watch and I’m gonna wear the damn thing! But before that I had a hard time putting in on.
I’ve come to the realization it’s time to build my story with it..

I find myself feeling this way as well quite often. I too am new to the more expensive watch life and find myself constantly worrying about messing them up, I am hoping that it just comes with time and being more comfortable wearing the piece
