Why do we wear rolex?

For me I’ve loved the brand since I was a teenager back in the 80s, I would always admire my fathers rolex but now it’s not only my love for the brand but also that since the early 2000s they are completely all in-house except the hands and as an adult now with 3 kids, bills and a mortgage the piece of mind that my watch doesn’t loose all its value as I walk out of the store. I’m not a rich man and actually my Rolex 126660 is worth more then my truck.

They do what they do better than anyone else. Mass produced luxury tool watches with good attention to detail, quality materials and robust/accurate movements. The exceptional marketing and slow design changes makes for a watch that will stand the test of time.

I wear ‘a’ Rolex because I’ve saved a lot of money since I stopped going out for pasta.

Always wanted one since reading/watching Bond as a youngster. Even pre teen I had a goal of having one someday. As for why...always thought the Sub was the best looking watch ever created. From the 50's to now in all forms, it just sings to me more than any other watch at any price. Then once you own one, you learn they are built like tanks, tough, durable, useful for about any activity. They have always held value well. When compared to other brands I have tried, the robustness and looks is really what wins me over.

This and the history and heritage. Rolex was a pioneer and teamed up with many(Doxa, Comex, Panerai) to give us an exceptional timeless and classic watch. Hans Wilsdorf was a genius in my eyes.

Because special media says they r the best. Hence the uprising in costs. Which will soon or later go back to where they should be

I think the slow design change is what makes them stand out. You can look at a GMT from the 70’s and it definitely looks older than the ones of today. However, the new models all go back to their original DNA.

With datejusts and DD’s I can’t tell the difference between one from the 80’s and one from today. Unless I am up close to it.

I was looking at some of the pieces they had an 47th street today on my way to work. One of the owners came out and tried to get me in, probably to buy a GMT for 16k or a Submariner for 14k. I told him I was just glancing and I’m not buying anything until the market calms down. He responds, “I don’t think it will!” Of course he doesn’t

Pretty much this.

And really designed to last a lifetime. Both the look and build. Not many things you can say that about these days.

In addition I think of them as "Functional Art". A superior design aesthetic combined with a superior construction.

I've always wanted a Rolex and yes part of it was name recognition. But later on there was a certain appeal to the craftmanship, quality and then there's knowing that Rolex watches retain much of their original cost for many years. Can't say that about many things in life.

I wear mine currently in protest at the smartwatch with Bluetooth gubbins that seems to pass for a good watch lately.
