Anybody fancy a chat about the Explorer?

So I popped into my AD this week (London) and am going to be buying my end of career watch (it comes with a bonus), this will be the 214270 there are lots of reasons why it will be the explorer that we don't need to go into today.

Whilst I was talking to them they said there is no longer a waiting list for the explorer which made me wonder, are they going to change it up for 2020, is there something in the pipeline?

Do you think from 2020 the Explorer will become 40mm or down to original 36mm if there is a change?

When should I think about going to a store and put my name on waiting list for the explorer if they have one available (I have 18 month left in post then that's me out).

Any links to any news on changes would be nice too.

As always I wish you all well.

Dan

I have only this to offer. (I know less than practically any of you about the brand). If I really thought that there is a chance, however remote, that a new watch was in the works that was going to be introduced the same year I planned to retire, I would kick myself for not waiting for that watch. No one here knows any more than you do what will be introduced at Basselworld 2020. But your hunch sounds plausible. Not likely, but plausible.

I think it will stay as is. Saw one last night at an AD.

i would get my name down and buy it now if it becomes available. Would you prefer a 36mm version? IF they end up mixing it up in 2020 then there will likely be a queue ahead of you anyway, and you could change it at a later date.

That's the thing, they said they weren't putting anybody on a list for them which threw me a little? Yeah 36 is preferred but my wrist can hold up to 40mm in my opinion.

Such a great watch, it needs nothing and to change it would be a travesty.

I am with you. It is such an icon and such a great reference as it is. I don't think anyone knows what Rolex is going to do before Basel (unless your Rolex Passion Report leaking pictures hours before the launch) so any guess is as good as any. I didn't think they would make a TT Sea-Dweller but they did.

I would like to say show your interest since my AD is still taking names (in the states anyway) and see what happens.

I don’t think there’s ever been a waiting list for the EXP per se, though there may be a wait, which is a different thing.

Whilst it’s a reference that’s not as easy to come by as in years past, I’ve seen two or three in different AD displays in London and Essex over the last few months (including two in the same AD). Also a colleague of mine who isn’t a VIP nor was on any waiting list managed to pick one up recently. When I bought my OP, despite having bought other watches previously, including genuine waiting list stuff, I was told that they don’t take names for it - but they did let me know when they got the next one in. I don’t think the EXP is an allocation piece, meaning the AD just sticks it in the window when they get one - which explains why I’ve seen them about. The difference between now and a couple of years ago is that the EXP only sits there for a day or two rather than a week or two.

In your boat I’d probably pop into AD’s whilst out and about over the next year. There’s a better than even chance you’ll find one in which case buy it on interest free and pay it off with your bonus. Whilst doing that you’ll probably come across some friendly SA who’ll offer to give you a buzz when the next one comes in.

I got mine a couple of months back and even got a 10% discount on it.
My assumption is that they gonna upgrade the movement (to 70 hrs power reserve) and they are getting rid off all the stock meanwhile.

Looks wise I think there is gonna be no change as this model has already received a fairly recent upgrade in Rolex terms.

Submariner, Explorer and OP are the ones which are due for movement upgrade. For sure, all models are gonna get the upgrade and, as we have seen, this is done in a batches; a few models per year.

You got a 10% discount on a steel Rolex within the last few months. Was this new from an AD?

I would buy the watch I liked, at the time I was buying it. Not a watch which did not exist. If I was thinking that maybe I should hold back in case a new (as yet unknown) model might be in the works (which strictly speaking is always true), this would be all I needed to convince me that I didn't really like the watch enough to buy it in the first place.

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

The movement comment seems right to me. It's about due for the upgrade. The present size is just between large and small so my bet is it stays the same. I've had mine on every day for the two years since I bought it. It wears well, goes with anything, goes everywhere and looks good. I think you'll enjoy it, whenever you get it.

I purchased my first Rolex, which is an explorer with no purchasing history and no waitlist from an AD. Maybe I got lucky, sent an email enquiried about it and grabbed it the next day. To be honest, I feel maybe Rolex will update the movement for Sub first before Exp. But worry not, a good thing about Rolex is, update will be though functional but incremental. Doubt Rolex will look back to 36mm, Tudor maybe, not Rolex.

Did they have one in the display case as a friend has been ringing around AD’s in London and surrounding counties for months and not a sniff of one.

What store? I’ll get him to contact them if they have one freely available to buy.

If you like the watch then get it whenever you can. It will be worse for you if a new one comes out, as you definitely won't be able to get that one for a while.

Picked up my new Explorer yesterday and haven’t taken it off since.
Along with my ND Sub I believe I now have a couple of classics.

Not sure how / what they can do to "improve " the current iteration .

Seems to have evolved to a state of near perfection !

It'll stay as is - it just recently underwent a little update. Really a staple piece.
