I want to take the wife on a vacation and need some input on some good places to go, pricing, activities, sight seeing etc. Looking for an all-inclusive resort.

Preferably adults only.

Hi Brandon.

I love the Yukatan and Quintana Roo states in Mexico. I've been 3 times and every time has been highly enjoyable. I have stayed in Cancun proper, Playa Del Carmen and points along the coast. A lot of my advice would depend on what you like. Do you like the city? Then Cancun is your best bet with MANY fine hotels and a truly resort like atmosphere. Something more "Mexican?" Try Playa del Carmen, which has grown tremendously in the past 10 years, but still is less "resorty" than Cancun. I think my favorite, though, is Puerto Morelos, which is between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. It's a smaller town with good access to both cities and tourist locations.

How much time do you have there? IMO, MUST sees are Chichen Itza to learn about the Mayan Civilization and Xel-Ha, if you're into marine life. If your time is short, maybe Tulum, but IMO, it doesn't compare to the majesty of Chichen Itza. Find lots of time to relax on the beach with your wife.

Insofar as adult all-inclusives, I've stayed at three. Club Med in Cancun (Punta Nizuk), Excellence Riviera (Puerto Morelos) and Aventura Spa Palace (near Playa Del Carmen). We almost stayed at Secrets in Playa, which I heard was very nice. I've also stayed at the Mandarin Oriental, which isn't all inclusive, but is VERY NICE, albeit in a not-so-traditional Mexican style. Of all the aforementioned, I found Excellence to be the best as far as the cost-amenities balance goes. Remember, though, you're in Mexico.

We are currently at the Secrets Maroma Beach Resort and it is beautiful. Good food, pleasant staff and the most beautiful beach in Mexico.

Was just looking at it on the web - lovely! Is that the Secrets that is just north of the Mandarin Oriental?

April should be wonderful, but the later in the month, the better - you want to make sure the Spring Breakers are outta there. As you can see on page 2 of this link:

David - how long ago did you visit the Club Med? Last time I was there in '88 it still had the best beach in Cancun however the accomodations were very rudimentary. I have no idea if the storms they were battered with a few years ago in any way impacted their end of the beach. I'm wondering if they've updated the accomodations or spruced up the village at all since I was there.

It's been a while for me too - 1998. It was the same then, although I heard they rehabbed the place to make it more luxurious and better compete with the new generation of Cancun resorts. A quick Google search indicates that a $24M renovation was done in 2006, after the hurricane.

My folks were there for the hurricane. they had checked out and were on the way to the airport. Luckily the passengers made the driver turn around or they would have spent the next 3-4 days at the airport. They made the best of it. They somehow

got into another hotel room with another couple before it got too bad out side. Now when they go during hurricane season they always take several flashlights and keep their rooms stocked with water, fruit and other "essential" liquids.

We've stayed at the Excellence in Riviera Maya too (twice actually) with friends and everyone loved it. Last year, we tried the Royal Hideaway in Playa Del Carmen and loved that too. You can not go wrong with either one. Both all inclusives.
