Wedding gift (Tudor/Rolex) from wife. Please help

My wife gifted me this beautiful watch on our wedding day and said she’s gone to multiple ADs and done research before buying.

She gifted it to me with an absolutely beautiful note explaining how it’s uniqueness relates to our love etc.

All I know is the seller said it was 1930s and has an extremely rare “Rolex Tudor” dial

I have modern Rolex’s for the most part (new BLRO and explorer II) and know nothing about vintage Tudor

The one thing that caught me off guard was the colour of the lume, and the fact that the dial says Tudor and Rolex on the dial

I’m not sure how I would tell her, I feel guilty even looking into it. but It would break my heart if she got scammed

Any insight is appreciated

Personally, I would ask the mods to delete this thread and never think about this question again. It's a thoughtful gift, and you should enjoy it for what it is.

Or maybe we can just convert the thread into one where we show photos of watches that our wives gave us. Here's my contribution, and I'm not going to complain about the condition of the dial.

She spent a lot of money and I just don’t want her to be scammed with a fake of some sort

Seems a reasonable request, a friend of mine got taken advantage of, by some slick tongued operator in a vintage watch shop. Watch was bullshit. I went back with them an explained their need to refund. Coincidently the watch was for their partner. This is the one that sold on Etsy for either $1499 or $999 I see. Case is just gold plated, tudor movement fairly basic. So it's a difficult one, I'd imagine its a $300 watch. Regardless of the rolex tudor dial. Especially as its small.

Tudor 59 (aka FHF 30). I have no reason to think the watch isn't legit, just redialed at some point, which is certainly not unusual. I have no idea what it originally looked like. Probably 1940s with that shock protection.

I don't have any knowledge about these watches, but I think it's beautiful! I'm drawn more and more to these older, more petite references these days. Maybe it's because I too am getting older and gaining my own patina. :)

Anyway, congrats on the watch, and the nuptials. I'm sure they're both worth keeping! ;)

So 2 choices, clam up and love it for the sentiment, or mention the several falsehoods in the listing, which unfortunately migh make your wife feel foolish. Watch isn't 14 ct for a start. Steel case back is a give away. There is a beautiful 6 adjustments royalite observatory chronometer on ebay for the same money.

Yeah, a bit sneaky in the listing. At first it says 14k, and then later it says 14k gold fill. The NOS claim is obviously highly suspect, as are the claims about the dial.

Still, I'm not sure it would have mattered too much to the OP's wife if she had known the full truth; the watch obviously appealed to her. Not sure how you know the price, but hopefully it wasn't too much.

I’m going to take it to RSC in Toronto and pay the $200 for full authenticity report and go from there. She paid PayPal. So worst case I’ll be out $200 and file a dispute for the amount she paid

Hmm, cold be blowing good money after bad. Is there a 14 day money back policy? The gold misquote would be grounds enough for a refund due to false advertising. Problem is etsy is probably not as tight a ship as ebay is for customers, hence why a lot of unscrupulous dealers trade on it.

If she knew she was buying a turd she might have had second thoughts methinks. $1500C is very naughty. In good faith your wife thought she was buying you something special, unfortunately it happens all the time, with dealers bigging up stuff. Non watch people just don't know. Heck even when they do, they still need to tread carefully.

I’m not sure a person at the RSC could find the necessary data to unequivocally document anything other than a full-on fake. And I don’t think that is a full-on fake.

Sorry for the situation and hope you can get closure. I may have missed this somewhere else in the thread, are you unhappy with the watch on its own merits? (assuming its all authentic)

Yes. I didn't realize how much she paid, and that puts a totally different perspective on the seller and the listing. Now I understand where you are coming from. I was imagining that she paid something like one-third of that.

There are quite a lot of nice watches one can buy for $1100 USD.

Even if she overpaid. If it’s legit and authentic to a certain extent I’d keep it for the sentiment. I really like the watch. But if it’s complete trash and she was double crossed I think I should take action with the seller. I spoke to her about this thread and she said she doesn’t want me to keep it if she was scammed in any way

I agree that the $200 is not likely to be money well spent.

Don't bother with RSC. Just go for the refund, is my advice.

Just tell her how mirky the waters of vintage watch collecting are. She will understand. Then send it back and let her pick out something brand new from an AD. Dont blow $200 on having it assessed, waste of money.

I doubt RSC would accept it for authentication. I would ask for refund asap.

No need to pay for a Rolex evaluation - you've already gotten that here. Get the refund, then learn together with your wife about nice vintage watches. It will make you stronger in the long run, and you'll laugh about it in years to come.

A very kind gesture by your wife. I would have the conversation with her about the concerns with the watch and the need to get the money back. Don't lie or candy coat it, just be kind and direct. Get the refund and go pick out something together that will have a lot of meaning. You need to be able to have the level honesty as this is nothing compared to where you are going in marriage.
