Deciding on Exp1 vs. Submariner?

I myself was debating to upgrade my Exp1-114270 to a 14060M and just could not part with my 114270. Ideally I would have both but that takes convincing the other half

I'd get the Sub without hesitation. Exp 1 are dime a dozen.

I actually see a lot more subs than ex1s by a long shot.

That said, I’d go for the 14060, especially if it’s a one and only.

I agree. Regardless, of how dimes a dozen, I always get the one I prefer, even if it means being another dime.
Submariner for me.

I’d imagine subs outsell Explorers by a country mile.

114270 or 14060? 100% 14060

I don’t find the 114270 that appealing of a watch but I LOVE explorers and have 2 of them - 1016 R and 6610.

Go vintage if you can. Modern subs are great but I find modern explorers a let down compared to vintage. The 1016 R feels like a modern watch relatively so there’s that.

I have had 2 Exp1 myself and my ultimate Grail watch is in fact what you have . The 1016 "Ref. R" Issue is there are very very few for sale and the ones that are for sale are way way more than what a brand new Sub cost today.

Get the 14060m. I sold mine three yrs. ago for a 114060 and missed it, recently replaced it and now I dont wear the 114060, it's hard to take it off. This is one where prices seem to keep going up so get on board now. I know it's not about the money but still..

Go for the sub. I've made forays into DJs and Daytonas but always return to the sub.

I have had both several times. For me I prefer the Sub. But going from an Explorer to a Sub is not an upgrade. It's just another Rolex. They are all equal to me. Just because one costs more doesn't mean it's an upgrade.

Also ...

One of the reasons I love explorers is because I wear a lot of sport coats, and often go from crazy activities > formal. It’s a weird lifestyle, I won’t get into it.

BUT my point is that if you are more of a casual dresser the sub is the way to go.

The 14060 is one of the greatest watches Rolex ever made imo. Maybe the last great watch.

14060m. The last of its kind and one of the best Rolex references ever. We shall never see its like again.

Nothing beats the 14060 in looks.
Nothing beats the 114270 in comfort.

Both are legendary !

In your case, I'd wait a little to see what the next generation Sub will look like. Ceramic bezel, glide lock clasp, 70h power reserve, and thinner lugs. Imagine that!

I've been around the block a bit with Subs and Explorers. There are no right or wrong answers.
Settled with a 14060, 214270 and 16570 BD.

Observations.

114270 - too small for me.

114060 - supercase just looked ugly, didn't wear it.

my advice - get the 14060 pronto.

I was gonna say this, too. Explorers are definitely less common to my eye, and also almost certainly less generically Rolex-y, with no cyclops or fancy bezel.

That said, I'd personally still go for the sub. I just think it's neat.

I've owned a 114270 and 214270, but always keep going back to the Sub so that would be my choice.

Submariner = see them often and everyone knows they are Rolex. Heck even saw and complimented someone with a Green Kermit early this year.

Exp1 = In the last 20 yrs ( I live in SF Bay Area) I have never seen one in the wild and nobody has ever identified mine as being one.

Exp1 (36MM) = for the win. You will be likely the only one wearing one and nobody will ever know its a Rolex.

The explorer 1 (36mm) sits better on my wrist, is understated, lighter and more subtle than an Sub. I would go for a 36mm Exp 1 any day.
