Cheap Iconic Watches

Thanks to the well documented Rolex shortage and some browsing and research,
I pulled the trigger on a Seiko SKX009 on jubilee recently. Very happy with the looks and how it wears, even for my small 6 inch wrists. Fantastic value for money. Which got me wondering. What are the other iconic watches that are more affordable and can boast a long history, with a sizeable fan base and easily available. That can lay claim to being called an iconic piece.

Obviously a Speedmaster. Can be purchase (probably for a discount) anytime, anywhere. Definitely not a "cheap" watch, but certainly affordable compared to Rolex, especially in the secondary market.

I have an SKX009 also. Fantastic watch.

True. Unfortunately you can't get a new Speedy with a good price like the old days.

The Seiko SKX is a classic and every collection needs at least one. Another classic is the new automatic Timex Marlin. Great design, inexpensive and iconic brand.

Cheap and iconic to me is typically broadly accessible and recognized in many markets.

I'd say one of many standard Swatch designs, Orient divers or Timex Ironman even the Casio G-Shock. The new Timex Q is also a good option.

You can find one of many variants for around $150 or less and they can all be repaired or have parts sourced.

While the SKX and Sumo is a personal fave in my collection, it's creeping up in price and there's a lot under $150 to be had.

$250 - $500 is where it gets really interesting.

I don’t know how iconic but love my timex q reissue. Thinking about a bracelet for my SKX.

Been wearing my ‘99 SKX009 all weekend. Even with the recent overhaul (new movement, gaskets and crystal) that I can proudly say I did myself, I only have a couple of hundred dollars into this watch.

Of the current newer models, I would say that the Turtle will fall into this category in the future.

The SKX is possibly the second most iconic dive watch, with the Submariner and SKX being in first and second with light years to the rest.

I think Zodiac's Super Sea Wolf 53 is a very elegant and wearable watch and good value. It also rocks the jubilee. Whether it's iconic in Fossil's hands is another question.

You do not get any cheaper than this - CASIO A158W-1. Just bought one on eBay - $10.

Thanks, guys. One of the things I like about older Seikos is how well defined the teeth are on the bezel. Makes them more grippy and just nicer to turn. Modern bezels, at least on the SKX models, just don’t look or feel the same.

Interesting observation. You have an outstanding collection, Ky. All your watches are really amazing.

How about the Glycine Airman No 1? Absolutely faithful at 36mm with acrylic crystal.

That cheap, tinny Jubilee bracelet is one of my favorite bracelets ever. It's amazing how well it conforms to a bony wrist.

And for such a big watch, it wore okay on my sub-6" wrist.

I've flipped my 009 and my SKXA35 (yellow one) but am still hanging on to my 013.

Very kind of you to say, Flavio. Believe me, I paid a hefty premium for most of them but knew even then that it would pay off. I learned a long time ago while engaged in a different hobby to get the best example that I could find.
