Osso's quest for a White 1680

I thought I start this tread to document my quest. I'll be posting the details of each watch I find. It should prove to be rather entertaining.

I spent most of yesterday cruising the net looking for 1680s. I was surprised at the number that I have found. I've sent off emails and made phone calls for additional info and photos.

I have already "looked" at two others and they can be found in the threads below.

Opinions on 1680 - I passed on this one.

Opinions on another White 1680 I've yet to receive a reply to my email request for additional info and pictures.

Hi Stan, don't worry, I've read the comments. As I said in the post, I spoke with him on the phone. I recognize slick when I hear it or see it. I don't do business with slick people.

It seems many of the websites I found don't like to publish their prices. I found this one to be a very attractive watch as it comes with box and "papers". I was astonished at the asking price. Here's the response I got to my inquiry:

"You picked out our best Submariner, at least in my opinion. It's available and priced at $14,500. Let me know what you think."

GAK! That's the price of a red 1680. I found this Red 1680 on the vrf. It's in much better shape and I have some left over cash. I find $14.5k a bit on the high side.

They are not cheap but not that much.

also looks like newer replacement hands.

This morning I sent off an email request for additional pictures of this watch. Personally, I feel asking for pictures of the movement, inside case back, lugs, etc is a reasonable request.

Here's the sellers response to my request for additional pictures:

"We have a 5 day return policy for all Internet orders. If you want to pay for the watch we can send it to you so you can examine it. Just return it in a week and we will refund you the full amount, or if you like it you can keep it.
I don't have any extra pictures I can send right now. Thanks"

...and I don't want to take any. Isn't that what it says? As far as I am concerned this is a bad idea, it not only ties up my money, but ties up the watch from another potential customer. What if the watch gets lost in transit, it could create a real big problem. And, it wastes a lot of time. Having these kinds of pictures on hand is the only way to sell a watch. If pictures are taken while the watch is being service, everybody wins. Am I the only one that thinks like this?

Needless to say, I'll be passing on this watch too.

Its a buyers market and buyers are dictating everything now.Funny how things changed.The right 1680 is out there for you keep looking and you will find it.No rush they arent going up in value tommorow, next week,next month or next?Its out there looking for you to buy it.In this market buy the nicest example dont give in. The parts watches, redials, incorrect hands, aftermarket this and that over polished and what have you that was sold as rare got to have etc to the dumb and uneducated got to have it will be sub 3k soon. In a boom like the vintage market had junk was gold and now its back to being junk.Happens in every bouble so history repeats itself.Cash is King now.I dont think we are near the bottom more like the 2nd inning of the game.

I'm gonna keep you guys entertained. This is the first of two watches offered by the same company. This 1680 has had a pretty rough life as the case is pretty hammered. I like the fact that it has a nice old C&I rivet band. But, that is the only thing I like about this poor watch. It would make an excellent knock around watch at only $3900.

When I spoke with the seller on the phone, he seemed like a pretty honest fellow. I asked for additional pictures and he didn't bat an eye. I know taking additional pictures can be a bit of effort, I told him. His response was that it's part of the job. That's what I like to hear.

I am waiting for pictures of the nice 1680. I'll post those when they arrive.
