Finally got to see a Grand Seiko.

After watching many YouTube videos, I’ve decided a GS GMT with Spring Drive or hi-beat will be on my wish list. Ideally I would like a Peacock or other LE blue dials but they will have to be imported with a hefty premium.

Ive contacted a GS AD in London to see SBGE205 and SBGJ201.
So yesterday I’ve tried both watches on and was blown away with the quality and finish of the GS.
It felt more solid, robust than my tt Submariner. The whole watch feels very smooth to touch. The Zaratsu finish is definitely an experience you need to see in person.

I prefer the lug design and short crown of the SBGJ201 but dislike the rough dial texture.

Here is the biggest problem.
Both watches are far too thick.

I don’t think it’ll be comfortable wearing a chunky piece on my slim wrist

I personally don’t have any issue with the thickness - if anything, I really like the beautifully sculpted case with Zaratsu polishing and brushed lugs. It just wears so nicely.

Is it the most delicate of watches? No. Is it a beautiful all-arounder? Yes, IMHO.

You will find that the non-GMT should be a bit thinner.

The thickness chases me away from these. But I've been looking at the new quartz GMTs, which are really nice.

I agree with the thickness though I bought a Snowflake despite of it because of all the other attributes of the watch. It really puzzles me with all their abilities to make such nice watches they can’t make it a bit thinner same goes for the new Omegas which are even thicker.

I don’t think the thickness is the problem there. It’s just a big watch for you.

I think the watches look great. A lot of options from Grand Seiko. If these did not work I am sure there will be some that will.

Their watches do tend to wear a little thicker IMO. They’re beautiful though, and I agree the finishing is really outstanding.

Great watches. Outside of quartz, the non-gmt spring drive will wear the thinnest I think. For your wrist , would look at one w a sub 40mm case size

Thanks for your suggestions but I require a GMT function watch, I did consider the quartz powered Explorer style model but I prefer mechanical movement.

I’ve also tried on SBGM023 at Watchfinder but that’s nearly the same size as both SBGE205 and SBGJ201.

My search continues...

If you are used to wearing Rolex sport watches, their average thickness of 12.5 to 13mm is approximately similar to that of GS spring drive.

The Hi-beat movements are generally thicker.

jump on the train to London and hit up the Seiko boutique in Knightsbridge, get to try on more or less the full line....

I have the SBGE201 GMT and love it to bits...

These don’t wear thick on the wrist at all.

Thin wrists are the problem - not the watch.

Great watches. I really love them. The GMT you looked at is a beauty.

I have some frustrations with GS thickness on some pieces but I think we're encountering the Rolex reality distortion field here. Looking at the GS alongside that brick of a maxicase Sub, I know which one has a more problematic wrist presence. GL OP.
