SD4K on the brink...again
I've debated the idea of trading in my SD4K ever since getting it. But I've also had moments where I really appreciated it and tell myself to never let it go. To me it is basically perfect (I do wish the lugs were more like 5 digit lugs than the sort of shorter/stubbier look). The thing is, if I were to only have 1 black diver, the SD4K would probably be it. But I don't only have one. I also have a 16600, 10460, 16610 and 114060. So I am always thinking about trading the SD4K for the SD43. I'm not sure I really have a question. I guess it is about the value of a "perfect" watch amidst a collection versus a "perfect" watch by itself. Does the perfect watch lose points so to speak when it is amongst a variety of other similar pieces?

Always trade the sub before the SD
But why is the 116600 up for trade and not the others in your stable? Ultimately you're the one the watch needs to please. People have collections of multiple subs, and people have collections of multiple SDs. While each is quite different there's no right answer. |

Well, if it were me, at least 3, or all, of the following would let go first, before even considering the SD4k.
16600, 10460, 16610 and 114060 |

Ahhh you guys are right. Honestly I'm still too confused about which direction I want to take all my black divers. Will sit on them for now and wait for clarity. Good talk!

Dump the subs first. Sea Dweller is the king of divers. It would be like getting rid of your Porsches and keeping just the VW's!

I'll keep the SD4K, in my eyes that watch is not for sale or trade. Period. To me that is the perfect SD Rolex ever made!

The 4k will only become harder to find with time. If you enjoy wearing it, my advice would be to never even consider offloading it. It’s a special piece-

Sounds like you just don't pick the piece up and wear it as much as your other pieces. Then I would definitely let it go, maybe decide if it's time to let some other pieces go and get something new.

As there's no specific question it's hard to answer objectively.
All I can say is that you lament the fact the watch doesn't have 5 digit lugs but you own a 6 digit Sub?????? If it were my choice, the 6 digit Sub would be gone in a heartbeat and I wouldn't bother with the SD43. Keep the SD4K and enjoy it for what it is. It has slimmer and more stylish lugs than a 6 digit Sub and you have the SD thing well and truly covered. You don't say how big your wrist is but if you are genuinely considering an SD43 then I would be inclined to consider a variant of the 116660. Good luck |

I have a friend with a sd4k. It’s a nice piece. Also very short production run. Likely to do better value wise than most the others which means it would be hard to replace once gone

I fear that the 16600, 10460, 16610 and 114060 will get no wrist time once the size of the SD43 becomes familiar. It raises the bar against all five digits and, even the 6 digit sports watches.

Well....it is engineered to withstand greater depths than any other Rolex. When speaking of dive watches that is pretty important. Subs don’t even have a fully gradiated bezel or helium escape. What criteria would you use and what do you think is superior?

Have had the 116600 twice and moved it on twice. The 114060 is still here however. I would keep whichever you prefer, not the one that you think is rarer or more valuable.

You clearly like slimmer lugs and you’ll have a fantastic SD collection

move both subs you have for the sd43. I had all of your watches except the 16600 and now have the sd43 which is my fav out of all of them. Slim lugs and sits more flatter on the wrist than the Sd4k and of course the red Seadweller is killer!

Honestly my collection has been through many permutations and I always found it pretty easy to identify what to part with/trade - but now I seem quite stuck, not being able to part with anything I have. I suppose that is a victory, the goal actually. But I also want more pieces!!! Figure I should just enjoy what I've got for awhile until I get more clarity. Part of me worries about 'missing out' on the SD 43, if prices keep going up or if the red gets discontinued etc. But maybe that is okay if it works out like that - can't have it all, right?? This would be a lot easier if I could walk into an AD and try stuff on whenever I want!

Or, flip your subs for the JC. I think it's a more fun collection with the sd4k than the sd43 is
