Why 37mm Yatchmaster so UNPOPULAR?
I posted a question about my interest of purchasing a Yatchmaster 37mm reference number 268622. I understand why people don’t like comment about pricing. However I don’t see a lot of people envy or talk about this reference compare to Sub, GMT or even DJ??? Is there a reason why they are so unpopular among enthusiasts?
Second, if you have a choice between Yatchmaster 268622 and new DJ 36mm reference 126200 both with oyster bracelet, which one would you pick? And why? I am interested in your opinions of being a wis because I am stuck in the middle between these two beautiful watches. TIA TRF. |

It's most likely because everyone hates the number 37.

The 40mm YM is pretty unpopular as well, although I like it a lot. I think the 37 looks a lot smaller because of the wide bezel. The thinner bezel is how the DD36 can make it work.

Most people who buy a Rolex now want "wrist presence". Rolex knows this... 42mm Explorer II, DJ 41 when classic size was 36, Deepsea, etc. With the 40mm professional sizes, they didn't want to disrupt the traditional 40mm size so they introduced the maxi case. Hold a 5 digit GMT next to a current one and see the difference. The old blue/red bezel said in a measured tone "pepsi" and the current model screams "PEPSI!!"

I have a small wrist and when I last wandered in to my local AD where I bought my SubC, they had the 37mm YM that you have pictured. If I were buying a Rolex as my daily wear watch, I probably would go with the Datejust, but if I wanted to be bold, I would go with the YM. I think it looks great and would love to have it, but after what I spent on the SubC, I couldn’t bring that YM home or there would be trouble.

You guys are so funny, I do wish number 21 hit me more often next month in Vegas. But on a serious note, is it off balance? Ugly design? Too small (depends on wrist size though, I am at 6.5” which is good for me). These watches don’t move much or at all in secondary market.

The YM line is just a weird kinda-sub variant. Almost by definition, it couldn't possibly be as popular as the sub. I see plenty of people discussing them here, but it's not surprising that it's less than more mainstream watches. And this is a forum full of guys, while 37mm is increasingly considered too small for a man's sporty watch.
Given those two factors, the big surprise would be if folks here did pay as much attention to the YM37 as to more mainstream watches. |

Good video I’d like to share on the 37 vs 40
https://youtu.be/KROpMudsHBs I’d love either but would probably go for the 37. |

For me personally, will choose the larger sized case if both available. I have a preference for 40-42mm sized cases.

The 37mm was always going to be the dog. In a why the hell didn't you get the 40mm one kinda way..

All I know about the YM is that my AD always seems to have a number of them.

I love my 40, but wish I picked up the 37 instead.

Less to do with 37 and more to do with the YM. I mean, it’s an interesting watch. It looks like a flashy sub, but lacks the heritage. The sub and gmt are mainstays of the sport collection and have been since the 50’s. Most own 1 Rolex in their life and they will get the model they know, usually DJ or sub. I like YM myself and appreciate the size, but it’s a bit too flashy for me. The YM has always been a bit of a question such as where it fits into the bigger collection.

If comparing the 40 to 37mm YM (really the only fair comparison to make), the 37mm is less popular bc it looks way too small for a sports watch w a timing bezel - pretty sure it’s intended audience was women. The number of men with wrists that can’t carry the 40mm are quite small IMO.

I see why most men think it too small for their comfort. But beside the sizing issues, do you see anything wrong with it? Maybe odd design? Lack of purpose like someone mention above? I am interested to hear your opinions Bas.

I thought the 37mm was made for the APJ market?
Don’t listen to these fools saying the YM is some weird variant. They have zero clue what they’re talking about.

They would sell more if they added the blue dial variant.
But it is still on the small side |

I own a 40mm YM and I love it. I've never tried on the 37 but I've seen it on a girl and I thought it looked really really good. I have a 36 DJ and size wise it looks fine on me but not sure how the 37 YM would look with its bezel.
I'm assuming you tried it on? Where is it? I would love to go check it out and give you my opinion. |

My sister-in-law has the YM37 TT with black dial. It's an absolutely gorgeous watch and I couldn't keep my eyes off her, I mean the watch last year during Christmas dinner. I've been so in love with it that I just picked up an unworn 40mm TT rose w/chocolate dial.

2 strikes against it.
YM watches are far less popular of the sport variety from Rolex. Even the Platinum dial version was never anywhere near as popular as the Sub which it probably took it's styling cues from. Personally I love it. And most men just don't buy 37mm watches anymore. Lost of old dustballs on this site do (HA HA) but out in the wild they don't. Once tiny and 32-34 were womens sizes but not lots of women wear 36 and up to 40s. So trying to sell a man a 37 is like trying to sell him a Chanel watch. Probably aint gonna happen. These days if I was buying Yachtmaster I'd go for the black and gold 40mm. |
