Trading in a 2001 GMT-II for a Skydweller?

Just playing "what if" here. I noticed that some of the after-market sellers are listing my 2001 GMT for as much as $14K. (not bad considering I paid $5500 for it a few years back). It got me to thinking that a new GMT-II RG/SS is about that much, as is an SS Skydweller. I recently bought a new DJ, and have been very impressed with the bracelet -- love that 5mm adjustment feature and how much more solid it feels overall. That plus my new DJ only gains 0.2 seconds a day very consistently, while the GMT gains 4 seconds a day.

My GMT is in good condition (considering that it's a daily-wearer), and has been very reliable and faithful. And I enjoy how the AD's drool over it when I wear it into a store (it always causes a stir). But the thought of a more accurate watch, with a better bracelet, and with MY name on the warranty card instead of some strangers, keeps playing in the back of my mind...

So opinions? Would I be a fool to get rid of it for a new bauble that probably won't increase in value as much and is not seen as being as "desireable"? (Not that I'm in this as an investment, but I do enjoy owning things that appreciate in value instead of the opposite)!

What would you do?

Have you tried on a SKYD? It is a thick watch and wears big.

Have you tried on a SkyD?

You either love it or hate it on your wrist.

I would agree to try one on. These 2 are night and day in size and fit.

Good point about the Skydweller -- I haven't tried one on yet, so hard to even seen one in the store. Will definitely do that before I do anything rash... thanks!

But the RG/SS GMT-II is also appealing to me (whatever I get would have to have two time zones, I really love that feature when travelling) and that feels pretty much the same to me as my 2001.

Awesome move in my opinion. Lock in your gmt 2 profits and upgrade to a higher end model.

Keep your GMT, you'll regret selling it

If you trade I don't think you'll get more than 10k for your GMT. I could be wrong but I'd guess 8-9k. You'd need to spend a good $ to put your hands on a blue SKD so only you know if that's a good move. JMHO.

Also, the sale value numbers you see are for trusted sellers and if you decided to traded it in you I think you would be disappointed with the offers. Your GMT is a classic and would really be worth keeping and just waiting to buy a second watch when you can.

I would not sell a 16710, ever.

I would keep that one. Add to it if you like, but don't let it go.

Skydweller is a large watch, and while functionally superior, I never found the busy dial so appealing. (But somehow I love the busy dial of YM2... so not sure what is going on there.)

No way. I liked the Skydweller in pictures. Try one on and it's a different story. I was majorly disappointed. I found it ungainly and simply too large, for my 7 inch wrist. I have a GMT 2 Rootbeer 2002 and although a different look to yours, will wear exactly the same. It wears beautifully.

If you do like the Skydweller having tried it on, then I would recommend you replace your DJ instead of the GMT. The Skydweller shares similar aesthetics to a DJ41, assuming you have a fluted bezel, or better put, will have more in common with your DJ than with a GMT, although it is of course, mechanically superior and far more complex. I'm unsure of how much wrist time your DJ would get should you acquire the Skydweller, whereas the GMT is a very different watch.

I am actually looking to acquire an old stainless GMT and would have enough to buy a Skydweller. They are not to my taste, but then again neither is the DJ particularly.

I would personally go for a President.

Tough call, but as others suggest ideally you need to try a SkyD on ... it wears significantly different to a 5 digit gmt.

Good luck

SKY is big heavy watch. go check it out at AD first, some of the AD might have some gold models

My opinion is you have enjoyed this relationship with this wonderful 5 digit GMT and now you are considering stepping out and getting the newer model. What is life for if not to enjoy what is new. look at trusted sellers websites maybe you can do a trade deal and get the new model you want. Or sell the current piece and purchase at the AD. My only question is if you have considered the size of the new piece. While Skydweller is the most sophisticated movement and a very cool reference it is larger than your old reference. Maybe a new six digit GMT watch is what you need or maybe the 42mm Skydweller is for you I would also consider the 116710 LN . A discontinued model. This watch has black ceramic bezel, green GMT-Master II on the dial, green GMT hand, black dial, oyster bracelet, 40mm , 3186 movement. prices are going up on this piece. It isn't a new model but it is a six digit reference, and I think it is super stealthy cool.

Thanks, everyone. Tough decision! I'll definitely try on the Skydweller to see how it wears, but given my skinny wrist I suspect i won't like it. And I'm starting to think that I will miss the GMT if I sell it... maybe time to save up and go for watch #3, whatever that will be!

It must depend on what you’re used to wearing normally. I tried on SS Sky Dwellers (White & Blue) at DavidSW’s place and loved it. I just couldn’t justify pulling the trigger for that price.

I’d not trade your Classic GMT for the Sky D.

Don’t go after a hype! They’re both amazing watches. I have and love both of them. Try the skyD on, as stated, it’s a large watch and is not for every wrist imo
Even if you’re able to sell your 2001 GMT for $11k ish. The grey price of SkyD is around $23K. Unless you have a heck of an AD relationship!!
Finally go with what you like more, not just because a watch yields more than what you bought it for!
Good luck

I was actually toying with the idea of selling it to the salesperson I bought my DJ from at my AD, and make getting MSRP on a SkyD as a condition of sale! Don't know if she'd actually go for it, but she did say "if you ever want to sell that GMT..." so if I decide to sell it I'd talk to her first! And she has claimed they are a big enough AD that they can get whatever SS they want from Rolex. Don't know until you ask! But I want to be sure I'm selling before I approach her about that of course.
