Vintage appeal
I was at a Ralph Lauren recently and saw they had some vintage watches on display so I took a closer look. To my surprise, there was a 1981 submariner in there that I got to try on. Price was 13K, but don’t think it had all original parts. I must say, there was something very special about putting on a vintage piece though with beautiful patina, the light weight, the slim lugs, and subtle discolouration of the hands and date wheel. Made me think that maybe an older GMT, Sub or Explorer2 would be a very neat watch to own one day.

Agree, though I prefer the mid-2000's neo-vintage models. I bought a near NOS 16570 Polar a couple of months ago and just added a 2005 GMT.
Rolex had to evolve and the modern models/ceramic ones are superb from a tech & engineering perspective. However, the old school ones have their very own charm and remind me of my childhood and youth where I always admired them. "Vintage" is a world of its own and there are many pitfalls I believe. I'd either contact someone knowledgeable (if you know) to help you with the search/purchase or buy from a trusted vintage seller here. Good luck! |

I enjoy looking at them, really beautiful.
The feel on the wrist I find disappointing. I miss the quality feel of the modern 6 digit and can't get myself to buy one

OP- agreed. I’ve had the same feeling trying them on. The closest I’ve gotten is 5 digit models- 16570, 16610lv, 14060m, and others.... but I plan to go farther back into the 4 digits. Still learning and researching.

Someone posted pics of the 1680 and the other watches in that store...it did have some replacement parts...that’s being said it’s hard to beat a perfect patina matte dial...every collection needs a few. 5513,1680,1675 or all the above
