What's next for the Daytona?

I realise that we're many years away from the change, but the reference in question being the steel models, what's next for the Daytona.

Unlike the Submariner, the Daytona has not changed it's case size & it's proportions, so apart from the black ceramic bezel & the sub dials being filled in black on the white steel model, what potentially changes do people see further down the line?

Who knows with Rolex, could discontinue 116500 next year and upgrade the movement.........that would throw the proverbial spanner in the works with grey market and prices

I'm not a fan but that doesn't mean I dont like it. For me, considering a chrono I would feel my money would be much better spent on a VC. Daytona needs to be a true 41mm. If it was available with a date option like a Sub that could be a stellar move. A blue or green dial on SS would be nice as well. That's just my thoughts, dont shoot me!

I would like to see the Daytona larger and more legible. Then I would be interested. The jubilee bracelet would be nice as well. As it is, I owned a few and could not bond with it as it is. I maintain that a huge part of its appeal is the scarcity, money, and FOMO. Were it in plentiful supply demand would drop as would the accolades it receives.

I will say it will grow to 41mm soon.

Given that most changes will be so minimal and incremental that they might not be visible, I would be happy with a jubilee bracelet option.

I mean the previous gen explorer 2 was really nice, the new one is a little too big for my taste

Same with the 36mm explorer, the increased the size

i still think people that can’t read it need their eyes checked.

it’s my favorite watch that i own. bar none. i also don’t understand why so many on this forum seem to believe that people don’t actually love it because they don’t.

want a bigger rolex? buy an SD43. want a date? plenty of watches to solve that issue for you (and sometimes that does annoy me, admittedly, as i use the date window often).

it’s very very comfortable at “40mm” (which we all know isn’t) and a jubilee option would be fairly lovely IMO, but i desperately hope they don’t change the case size or muck with the dial.

would be amazing to see them reduce the text on the dial. a modern ROC would be amazing, without all the superfluous stuff.

The Daytona case size has changed already in recent updates. The SS, TT, and YG bracelet models are 38.5mm, while the RG, WG, OF (including YG), and Platinum all have a case about 1mm larger. Lastly, the Platinum Daytona has a different shape to its crown guards (more than likely to simplify machining of the Platinum) from the rest of the line altogether. The smaller 38.5mm Daytonas also have disproportioned right side lugs in an effort to make the watch more "balanced" when taking the chronograph pushers into account visually. Though if you're talking the case changes to the SS model exclusively, then I could see those happening next round of refreshes for the SS in 12-13 years.

IMO, date windows at 4 o'clock on chronos look awful. I do like the 12 o'clock date on ALS and one or two others, although IMO a chrono dial is busy enough without a date.

I can imagine that they *could* change the case size, as they have done that in the past 50 years. But I would be hugely surprised if they took an iconic, well loved watch that had been a 3 sub-dial chrono for its entire existence and tossed a date in there. Just my opinion.

In it's current form, the Daytona is perfect for me right now.

I would bet Rolex will roll out a bigger version in the future, but it won't matter to me as I'll be happy with what I have.

Agree, except for Zenith who gets it right

Only issue with mine is the size, which is really apparent when I put it on a strap, ideally it would be a true 40mm.

The Daytona probably won't see a lot of changes in the next little while. The current reference is only 3 years old. The 116520 lasted for well over a decade and same with the 16520.

You probably won't see any significant changes until 2026+. And even when that hits, Rolex updating the movement may create enough "wow."

In the meantime, the only "updates" would potentially be full PM or TT models receiving a ceramic bezel and/or new dial variations (for the non SS models).

Yep, I just can’t see what else they can do domestically with it as I can’t ever see a date being added or an increase in case size. Whereas the submariner, gmt, have all been victims of the maxi case & dial infestation.

WOW - it would be great if Rolex updated the Daytona to 41mm.

This would mean that half the current owners would rush out to upgrade, and then start new incoming threads about how the new size is perfect. And the rest of us could then get great prices on slightly worn preowned 116500's.
