Help! Rolex Explorer 2 advice for clueless wife

Hi guys

I’ve bought my husband an Explorer 2 for Christmas but I’ve just checked it and it’s not ticking. Obviously, this is because I’ve let it sit (hidden) for about 15 days! How do I get it to tick again and then how do I make sure it keeps ticking ready for Christmas Day?!

Any help is so appreciated as I’m so clueless to this! Just hope he loves it!

Just wind and set the day before Christmas, but really no biggie if not running. Because it's a mechanical watch it will only run so long as there is power reserve left. The Exp2 is a perpetual watch, meaning in Rolex speak if you wear it the rotor will spin on the movement and store energy in an effort to build power reserve. If you wore the watch every day, it technically will never need winding. The power reserve on an Exp 2 is about 48 hours, which means after 48 hours from full charge if no movement (winding of the rotor while watch on wrist) or manual winding of the crown the watch will stop running. I'd just leave it be to be honest just like they sit in displays at the ADs.

Great gift btw

Exactly this. Just leave it be, there is no need to wind it up. He is one lucky husband!!

My suggestion.
Don't worry about it and you both can learn together on the day.
The owners manual shall provide all the information you both require.
Alternately the dealer should be able to provide a short tutorial in store on another watch with the only complication being the setting of the 24 hour hand and date. Or try a Google search of a youtube demo.

Congratulations to you both

Unscrew the crown, the knob that sticks out on the side, and you will feel it softly pop out further when it is unscrewed. Then, wind it about 40 times clockwise, or until you feel resistance. Then stop and carefully push the crown in until it stops and keep gently pushing as you twist the crown until it catches the thread, and then keep turning until it stops. You have just wound it.

Winding only lasts a couple of days, so I would let it stop until right before Christmas and then wind it.

Congratulations in advance, I’m sure he will love it

I wouldn’t bother winding it. Let him open it Christmas Day and enjoy the bonding experience with his new toy

I would leave it as is. I am sure he will get it running shortly after you gift it to him and will enjoy learning how to do it

Do you have a sister who also likes to buy great gifts and is single? Asking for a few thousand friends.

You can also ensure all goes well for the gifting moment by trying this:

Wind it up like others said, 40 full rotations of the crown.

Set the date for 25.

Set the time for approximately the time you’ll gift it. (And you can wrap the Rolex box inside 2 or 3 increasingly larger boxes with a label on top saying “do not open until XX am Christmas Day)

Now pull the winding crown all the way out. This will stop the watch from running while at the same time keeping it fully wound up.

Now go about that boxing!

Once it’s open and he has picked himself up off the floor, you just reach over and close the crown, screw it down and...well, take some pics!

Welcome to TRF

Needs a new battery. Send it in to an RSC, hopefully they'll have time for the service before Christmas. Expect bill of $500.
