Tourneau - Please Don’t Touch My Watch

I’m generally puzzled by this behavior at Tourneau.

I ask to view a watch, I place mine into the tray. While I try the watch, the SA continuously picks up and puts down my watch.

Every Tourneau SA does this and in a way that is very similar and deliberately so.

What gives?

Ive had this although not a Torneau, Ive assumed the SA was checking it was real and thus serious in buying the watch i was looking at.

Interesting, they've never touched my watch once I set it down to try on something at Tourneau. I have had an experience where some one else tried to pick up my watch when I was at the Rolex Boutique on 5th Ave. Both the SA and I looked at the person, and I grabbed him by the wrist to stop him.

I just leave my current watch on and use my "non-watch" wrist to try on new watches.

It was my 14060M and I had set it down to take a look at a gmt. He was a japanese tourist and apologized profusely. The SA was already motioning for the security guard as the store was somewhat busy.

Is it not more likely these guys are just showing an interest in what you’re wearing, or at the very least pretending they’re interested?

What?

I’m assuming you were wearing something extra nice

What watches did they take pictures of?

It’s psychology.

You have the opportunity to touch a new one and they remove the old one so you can more easily visualize life with your new one.

They also likely over-compliment it and then follow with ‘it’s beautiful. You know, we have buyers looking for these now.’

It really is part of that identity.

Yes...happens exactly as you describe. Tourneau does this as do other ADs I've visited. I think they are also subtly checking to see if what you're wearing into the store is authentic.

My AD never does this, but all my Rolexes have been purchased from him.

Maybe it depends on the watch if they’ve never seen it before

That is a major faux pas and certainly a sign of a inexperienced sales associate so that should send up warning flags.
I certainly would have asked why you are handling my Rolex? The watches you are trying on are store merchandise and not the SA personal property so there is no comparison.
I have had only one owner ask if he may look at my watch in this situation and we were talking watches for 30 minutes by then. He just wanted to see a new Rolex release at the time. I had no problem since he asked. I don’t like anyone touching my watches or cars.

This has happened to me in more than one AD. It doesn’t bother me so much, other than when they put my watch down flat (dial side up). I don’t lay my watch flat to avoid unnecessary metal on metal contact with the bracelet/clasp and the caseback.

I think it’s because the SA are in the habit of laying them flat, because the watches they handle daily are fully stickered.

Yes!

This sort of thing would really frost me if done to my Pelagos LHD with the numbered case back. I take great pains to avoid getting that area scratched and place a cloth between there when storing.

Amusingly, I could not care less, though, about the rest of the watch obtaining normal wear and tear.

Oh man, I agree 100%

That bothers me too.

If it wasn’t for that and the fact that they might drop my watch, I don’t think I would mind.

(I was once looking at the pre-owned Rolex section at the AD, SA was moving watches around, and she dropped one onto the counter. Maybe a foot and a half of a drop, but still a drop)

This drives me nuts. When I went to get my brothers brand new Sub sized the guy sizing it was slapping it down case-back against the bracelet, I was cringing the whole time - but who am I to tell off the in-house watch sizer?

That’s why you size your watch yourself

Yes, i agree with you. I always put s a microfiber or something soft between the case back and the bracelet. Otherwise, I place my watch in a circular configuration on its side.
