Ebay Fees - Huge increase

Occasionally we rid ourselves of unused bits and bobs, old mobile phones, MP3 players, broken games machines etc and use Ebay as a venue to advertise these articles.

I split the last lot of "crud" over two separate periods to split my packing/postage efforts into two manageable parts.

This week's total haul was £340 for 5 items (people pay silly money for broken laptops/DS etc).

Total Ebay fees - £11.65 or an average of just under 3.5%. They previously worked on a sliding scale charge.

Next week's haul will likely yield the same sort of amount yet the Ebay fees will be £34.00.

A 10% flat fee has just kicked in, under the radar and hidden behind by the bullcrap "free 99p" listing nonsense.

This represents a massive 200% price increase on fees.

The fees are capped at £40 so if you sell a £5,000 watch you are actually quids in but when you consider the average item value on Ebay is less than £100 then Ebay are in the money, big time.

If you get paid by paypal the overall Ebay charges rise to 13.4%

Now that is painful, and cuts deep into any profit you might make if you are a reseller.

I'm pissed with them.

I just put my Wii Fit up for sale - which is techincally a video game but has a large and heavy balance board as part of it.

Well, their "maximum shipping" on my item was $4.00. Are you kidding me?!?! So, not only do I have to pay them and their paypal fees, but now I LOSE money on the shipping as well.

I've tried this a time or two, Jen - increase your starting price a little to offset the shipping, and then offer the buyer Free Shipping. That might entice them to pay a little more for the item - the smarter buyers, anyway.

Yes, I gave up trying to sell items on E-bay several months back. I've been an E-bay buyer/seller since 1999, and I ALWAYS pay/get payed with money orders only. I've NEVER got burned (knock on wood). Then, all of sudden, E-bay will NOT accept MO's as a form of payment. You HAVE to have a PayPal account in order to sell anything. I've gone threw the whole PayPal thing, HAVE gotten burned, and to top that off, have to pay an additional 3%. Now, maybe I'm being too old school and should just give PP a second chance, but it seems to be that a lot of sellers (that I've known for a while through E-bay) have gotten fed-up as well.
What do you all think ? Am I being too anal about this no money order, PayPal only thing? Not to mention, as the OP stated, thier ever-so-increasing auction fees. I mean, it's gotten so bad that E-bay will not even put your auction up if you have the words "money order" anywhere in your listing description.
Oh well :(

Screw ebay, I will buy your Fit - have wanted one for a while!

Is the price increase worldwide, or UK?

Yes, I've noticed this also ! No money orders accepted for payment. We should boycott eBay ! They seem to have forgotten who put them into business !

Ebay is going to hurt themselves, thy only THINK people have no where else to go. There are many other auction sites and you can always make deals behind the scenes.

Yea, Jen's a cutie!

I pretty much think as a seller Ebay sucks. We occasionally list pens for sale on ebay and it used to be pretty good. The thing I do not like about ebay now is they only look out for the buyer, not the seller.

As of new rules, a buyer can burn you with a negitave feedback, but if a seller gets screwed buy the buyer, you are no longer allowed to leave a negitave comment for them.

It is no longer a fair playing field.

It used to be good but now people have worked out how to use it and work the system to get more for their items its pretty poor.

On top of that as Paul was saying the amount they are taking people for, and under the radar is a disgrace. I have also noticed more and more people are refusing to accept payment by paypal.

I wouldn't say it has run its course but I know a few people who refuse to use it now and they were big style ebay fans. Being careful is something they need to look or else they may be in for a nasty shock.

Si

I'm super PO'd at eBay. I ended up selling my Wii Fit for $66 (which is cheap!)

Anywho, for that category max shipping was $4.

It cost me $23 to ship today! So... I made around $45 on my Wii Fit that was used once.

WOW ! That's horrible ! Well, join the club, after almost 10 years on E-bay, I've about had it with them as well. Too many new (unbeliveable) rules, costs, etc. etc.

...as Paul, one of our mod's has said...

...the eBay fee increase is really over the top.

...it is causing many sellers, as stated above, to rethink everything and even be turned away from selling there.

Stan.
