Is it safe to travel to Manila with a rolex?

Is it safe to travel to Manila with a Rolex?
I hear some people say not to wear anything
expensive due to crime over there. Is this
accurate?

I will go with a airplane or a car instead.

Sorry I couldn't resist.

I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry.

You should be safe as long as you know where you going and doing at all times. My brother alway wear his RG Daytona when he travel and he goes to PI once every 2 months.

By the way, make sure it's real or they feed it to you if it's not.

As with any place you go to in the world, you have to be careful with the way you carry yourself. In ANY major city there are always incidents of theft or robbery.

Manila was a bad, bad place a few years ago. Although I have never been only heard about tourist being robbed and beaten. Talk to your travel agent see what they say. You going for business or pleasure? Maybe wear a long sleeve shirt and if someone asks for the time pull out the ever trusty and easily replaceable cell phone. just back up all your contacts before you go

I heard there was a hand grenade thrown in a marketplace somewhere in the Phillipines the other day and it killed 4 people.

If I were you I'd be more concerned about my health than the watch. Make sure you get all your shots before you go there.

Just like in any other cities in the world, its safe to wear a Rolex just as long as you avoid the ff:

1. Having a lengthy conversation with a stranger.
2. Walking into an unlit/dark street or alley at night.
3. If you're staying in a hotel, be sure to keep your watch in a safety deposit box or in
the safe provided in you're room.
4. Hailing a cab late in the night. I suggest you call a cab service # to have
them pick you up and bring you to you're destination.
5. Wearing your watch in a jeep.
6. Walking along downtown Manila.- Sta Cruz, Taft Avenue, Ermita, Pasay and Baclaran.
It would be better to avoid this places while wearing your watch.

I won't risk it. And I'm native to the philippines and grew up in Manila. No matter how careful you are, there's always the risk.

i'm from the philippines... don't! i repeat don't take it with you... not worth the risk. then again there are amazing rolex counterfeits back there the muggers won't know the difference. advice to enjoy Manila, be as simple as you can. but in the provinces and other islands it's pretty ok. just manila you have to watch out for.

Interesting post, I've never been to the Philippines before, but have been to Bangkok a couple of times before and felt safe wearing my GMT II, Explorer and a ND Sub. Even at night, no issues...

I'll be going in a couple months or so. It is business related but
don't have the details of the trip yet. Maybe I'll just bring it
and if I feel unsafe then I'll put the rolex in my pocket when I'm
on the streets. I plan on bringing the GMTIIc as it has the time zone capability.

yet other than to Manila. I like to bring my GMTIIc since it has the time zone function.
Maybe I do as Oscar suggested...put the rolex in my pocket if I feel the street is not safe.

Looks like there are some think that it is safe and some don't think it is safe. Like to hear
more input from those that been there.

I don't know about Manila, but I've been in Vietnam many times. I won't take my Rolex with me there since I've seen purses and watches being snatched off by the bikers! and beside, I like to go to town and mingled with locals there. A Timex or Casio will do me just fine! I'd rather be safe than sorry!
