Another Rolex QC issue

Hey guys,

Just picked up the pepsi last week, couldn’t be happier with it. I consider myself very fortunate to have gotten it as my AD came through for me in a big way.

With that said, I’m not sure what to do with this one. I understand it’s probably relatively minor to some but since I spotted it it’s all I can see. You can see in the pic below right by the 8 o’clock marker there is either a piece of lint or a scratch on the underside of the crystal. Seems to be a fairly common occurrence with Rolex, but this is the first I have had that has an imperfection like this.

I am hesitant to take it to RSC as I don’t want the watch opened up, not to mention I have little faith that it would come back spotless given some of the horror stories I have read. I am going to try to give it some time and just see if I can live with it. It is just frustrating that a 10k watch would be delivered with an imperfection under the crystal...

Just wait.

I can save you some time reading all replies after this one because 99% of them will suggest this: Just have it fixed during your first service right before the warranty expires.

I personally would see how well it keeps time. My thought being that if it wasn’t great, then you have two reasons to send it in to RSC. If it’s a rockstar in its timekeeping then I wouldn’t open up the watch. Something to think about and test.

What would be the advantage to waiting just before warranty expiration?

Did the AD know about it and then sold you this piece on purpose? Did they disclosethe issue. Sending it to the RSC might be the only solution.

Wow sorry. That’s difficult to decide.

Very good point and part of why I am hesitant to open it up. Over the past week I think the timekeeping has been spot on. But I will keep an eye on it. Thanks!

Hm, interesting thought. However, I am close enough with the owner that I doubt they would have intentionally tried to pull a fast one on me.

To be fair, even if they had... I think I would overlook it considering they got me the watch within a pretty good time frame.

You are right though in that the only recourse I have is through RSC at this point.

I’d send it to RSC through your AD.

Like you, that’s all I could see and if it ruins your ability to enjoy the watch , why live with it?

That's good. Usually ADs don't do that and everyone can miss out on things like this. Didn't Rolex QC and everyone till an AirKing with two 9 got sold! So anything can happen.

Honestly, I'd get it looked at, might be a hassle but better get it fixed now. Plus, it will keep bothering you for a long time. I sent in my watch in less than a year. They fix it. Takes 3-4 weeks. But get it done.

Not sure why everyone is so adamant about sending watches to RSC here.

Since you just just picked it up, I think it’s quite reasonable to bring it up it with your AD. What’s going to suck is that you would probably be parted with your new acquisition for a few weeks.

Really depends how much it bothers you. Realistically, you'll only get it serviced 5-10 years down the road. And that's a pretty long time to have to deal with a 'defect'. I can't really see how bad it is from the photo, but if it's really bad then just bring it in to have them fix it. Just know that you risk having other minor problems: scratches/more dust after bringing it in.

Maybe just sell it at msrp with the minor issue disclosed, then start over and buy another. I’m sure someone would be thrilled to give you $9,000 for it.

What you do is up to you. I would probably get that fixed ASAP, it seems obvious enough to be annoying on a daily basis. You seem to have been in luck with the bezel colors, I think your's look nice.

Ya sorry, the pic in the first post was taken without the defect in mind. Perhaps this shows it a bit better.

Appreciate all the responses guys. I know in the grand scheme it is a small issue.

I really can’t take it back to the AD. They really did me a favor getting me the watch. I deal with the owner, so I don’t want to come across as ungrateful. That said, even if I didn’t have the relationship, isn’t taking it up with the AD just going to result in a trip to RSC as the solution anyways?

Thanks!

Thanks! I do fall in the camp of believing there are variations in bezel color. Not sure what mine would be categorized as, but I do love it!

Now that you’ve found it, you can’t undo it. It would drive me crazy.

Have said AD send it in, free of shipping charges. It will come back like it should have been in the first place.

Keep us updated please.

That would bug me considering its now considered a privilege to be selected for Rolex ownership.

Send it to RSC. Get your money worth. Don't worry about your AD. They got your money.

Many believe it's better to wait until just before the warrantys up as you may have more problems to address even if it's just a simple timing calibration for running beyond cosc specs.

Is it lint or is it a scratch ?

Be prepared to expect flea bite marks on lugs and miscellaneous scratches on watch / bracelet when you get watch back from RSC.

I've seen the exact same thing, several times, and all GMTs (probably coincidence). Mine was one of them. Took it to RSC, they took care of it no questions asked. I've not had any subsequent problems and it keeps good time. BTW, I couldn't unsee mine either, since it migrated to right beneath the Cyclops.

If you have an independent Rolex-certified watchmaker close by in the land of X, take the watch to that one and have him check it out for you.

Whatever the problem is, that individual will be able to offer solutions and it will take less time than sending the watch back to RSC.

If not, I think the best thing is to live with it for about a month and if it still bothers you, you should send it in.

I don't get riled up over dings and scratches to the bracelets and cases, but anything having to do with the crystal of any watch bothers me.

There are two distinct versions that I personally know of and yours is not the first. Mine is the only one different than the many identical other ones I have seen but I am open to there being a third.

Judging by the updated pics it may well be, as already suggested, a scratch in the crystal. I would absolutely take it to the AD right away.

here is my vote to leave it alone and wait for it to be serviced, they will most likely only make it worse trying to fix it, be it scratches on the back of the lugs, or something else....been there and done that and while I get that it sucks, the chances of something going wrong are pretty high IMHO

yup....as the second poster said, If I could do it again I would wear it and wait for warranty to be up or service time, when it has some wear and you'll care less about some minor marks.
