AD dj turnograph

My local AD has one dj turnograph in stock.

It's a discontinued watch and I was wondering if it would be a good buy/investment.

What are your thoughts?

Best to buy what you like instead of what you think might have future value.

Please do not discuss watches as an investment.

It takes people's interest to up the value of a watch. If it's still there it should probably tell you something. They weren't popular then and still aren't now. Maybe a long time the road but who knows?

Majority are all about sport models and not DJ.

I’ll echo what everyone else said. Forget if it’s a good investment - it’s not. Get what you love and don’t worry about it. It feels nice to know my Rolex watches have increased in value, but that means nothing if it’s not a watch you have a connection to. I could care less that other high end watches I have are worth a fraction of what I paid for them.

I love the idea of a turnograph. A useful bezel on my dj would be great. I don't care much about the investment stuff though, so I can't help there.

Bit like the unpopular Daytona In The late 60s which are now ridiculous prices! Truth is who knows!!

The TOG is from AD, so it should be NOS, but if it holds such good value, why it still stay at AD after some years later? It's difficult to say if it is a good investment, but there are certainly other better ways to invest.

Funny how some people have such strong opinions about this potential purchase without knowing the answer to this very basic question.

Whether it's a good deal or not depends on price and some of the other variables discussed here.

It is not in my opinion a good investment, but it is a very nice watch that I would be proud to own.

I could have bought one when they were in production, but at that time, I was not interested in gold watches, bezels, links, etc.

I've since changed my mind about that and I now own a TT Thunderbird Turn-O-Graph, ca. 1986.

Good investment? Doubtful. You can find them NOS for around what they sold for new. Used for less. It's had 10 years to become trendy and it hasn't happened. Compare that to something like 5 digit subs which NOS with box and papers sell for around twice what they sold for new and well worn still sell for more than they did new.

That being said I think it's a really cool watch. Basically a DJ with a useful timing bezel. Understated, classy and a little different. But I think it has a slight identity crisis which was why it wasn't that popular and discontinued.

If you wanted the watch because it's different and is a historic Rolex tool watch that has been discontinued from the catalog for a number of years then I would say yes, get it. As an investment piece, first tell us what is the asking price for this NOS watch? According to C24 the watch was trading for low $4k in 2011 the year the watch was discontinued and on C24 today averaging in the low $6k That's an increase in value of 50% in 9 years. It isn't trading like a Daytona, but alot depends on how much you are buying it for today. Interesting cool watch, it was the first rotating bezel on a Rolex back in the '50's. It probably could have turned in to two time zone watch, but they invented the GMT instead, and today we have the SKyDweler which is the Datejust with rotating bezel and two times zones, plus annual calender. Also it's a 36mm watch which will appeal to a wide audience if you want to sell it.

Great post! To the OP: I'm a TOG 'fanatic' so if you decide not to buy, could you let me know where it's located? Been looking for a NOS TOG to replace one I reluctantly had to sell.
The Turn-O-Graph is my favorite Rolex.

Agree! Which specific model we are talking about? Dial color? Bracelet style?

I had the black dial version, very nice looking.

AFAIK the Turnograph was discontinued in 2011 so it has been laying around at that dealer for quite some time now.

You should be able to get a nice discount on that watch.
