Rolex Sub Ref. 14060M

I have an opportunity to buy a sub ref 14060m 4-line for 7800usd with the green card that was apparently serviced 6-months ago. I already own a DateJust 1601 w/ a jubilee but am looking for something a bit more modern/substantial but with a vintage heritage, and this seems to be what I am looking for. The question is this: I am a freelancer and my income fluctuates from year to year, do you think it's worth buying now (I'm assuming this watch will be going up in price considering it's the last updated watch of that era and the price has nearly doubled over the past 5 years) and if for some reason I'd be able to resell it with little loss?

Price depends on a lot of factors, including condition and provenance. 7800 USD is in the realm/range of a good condition b+p 14060m though based on my anecdotal observations.

A watch isn't a very good financial instrument.

If it's a full box and papers set (Inner and outer boxes, hang tag and seal, booklets, card) and in good shape that is a decent price these days. The 4 line versions seem to sell for somewhat more than the two line versions.

I agree with the others, based on condition and full set, it is a fair price.

No one knows what the market will be for resale in the future...

If you are unsure of your financial situation...you may want to postpone the purchase until you feel more confident....why lose any sleep.

Honestly, I wouldn't make a significant purchase unless I had my financial house straight and had the ability to withstand a little volatility.

Keep in mind that if it is about ten years old or so it could likely need a service soon, as did mine, a 2010 model (4-liner.) The older lubes gummed up, $545 to service by an independent Rolex Service.

Well worth it for me, though, as it had hardly ever been worn before I obtained it. I paid over $8K for it.

It's a fantastic reference, a true classic. However, do not assume it will go up in price.

The 14060M is a classic, and is becoming increasingly popular.
I have this watch and it is one of my favorites.
However, do not buy it for an investment, or if your finances are such that you may have to worry about the purchase in the short term.

I have 3 subs and I wear my 14060m more than I do my 116610LN. It feels like a throw back to the Rolex glory years of 60s and 70s.

Can't go wrong with a 14060m. I lean toward the 2-line myself. I doubt you would have trouble moving a full set if you needed too. But as others have said, I wouldn't treat it as a financial asset. It's not that liquid.

2 liner > 4 liner imo.

I have always admired the 5512 and 5513 and their lack of text on the dials. The 14060m 2 liner is the next closest thing without going deep into vintage. So..... if the OP is looking for that touch of vintage with modern amenities- I would be more after a 2 liner.

Value wise, I think this reference is going to hold steady. Double in a year or two? Not likely-

I’d never buy a watch if were worried about it’s investment value to this degree. My advice is to wait a bit longer until you can buy it worry free.

I think the OP’s question isn’t about whether the watch is a good investment or not. It’s more about whether it’s worth buying the 14060 now, given the current price, or wait and see if the prices maybe go down.
I think it’s impossible to answer that question. I faced a similar dilemma when deciding whether to buy a 16710. Ultimately I chose to buy it and am very happy with it. I think even if prices come down they won’t drop too much.

I do not think prices will go down on the 14060 but I don't think they will skyrocket necessarily either in the way that the 16610LV or 16710s did the last 2 years.

Chimed in earlier and, coming back to this thread, agree with everything others have said - namely, never buy watches as investments. Will say, however, that certain variants of the 14060Ms have seemed to appreciate or be seen as slightly more desirable than others. By that I mean the Random Serial 14060Ms.

Yea, I think as a single freelance artist living in NYC, I know I will never be able to own a house in this area (most apts are 1m+). So I don't own a car, don't own a house, don't have a family or kids....I have ok savings (250k) so I'm in this place where I feel like I want to own something that is substantial. Something that I can enjoy and appreciate but is also somewhat valuable. Does that make sense?

Absolutely.

Buy it though, because you want it, not as an investment. You will wear it, it will get dinged and scratched and will be worth less than what you paid.

If that's OK, then go for it. If perchance it maintains its value or even goes up, then you've got what we call a win-win. Otherwise, it's just a watch.
